Students' Politeness Strategies to Lecturers in Sending Messages through WhatsApp

One of the issues that students face today is a lack of politeness in their language. Students' politeness is reflected in their attitudes when sending messages to lecturers. The objective of this study was to determine how polite students are when communicating with their lecturers through WhatsApp. This study was conducted at a private university in Sukoharjo. The data was obtained from student texts in the lecturer's WhatsApp app. The data was analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) FTA theory on politeness strategies. According to the findings of the study, some students were found sending messages without greeting the lecturers and instead conveying their intentions directly. FTAs are common, and students frequently threaten the lecturers' faces. The words used in a student's message can have an effect on the teacher's feelings and make the conversation appear informal. The Characteristics of Language Politeness in Students’ WhatsApp Messages to Lecturers

This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of language politeness in students' WhatsApp (WA) messages to their lecturers. The research method used was a descriptive method with data consisting of 460 WA messages from 75 students. From this study, it is revealed that 88.7% of the characteristic of students' WA message structure begin with greetings, an apology for sending WA message, self-introduction, message, and thanks with greetings. 82.6% of WA messages are characterized by conversational language style in which they are a fully structured idea which represented using subject and predicate with several omissions in a certain part. The contents of the WA messages consist of 20% of the final project topics such as clarifying supervising schedule, discussing the content of final project, informing the schedule of final project presentation; 66.6% of WA messages contain lecture topics such as informing rescheduled lectures, asking about assignments, asking about score, permission for being absent; and 13.4% of WA messages contain other topics such as felicitations and condolences. Thus, the WA messages sent by the students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung to their lecturers show the characteristics of language politeness.

Nowadays, text messaging between student and lecturer in academic environment is getting more and more common. This study analyzes the politeness strategies found in students’ text messages to their lecturers at English Study Program Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya Malang, Indonesia. This research used qualitative approach to analyze students’ text messages. The politeness strategies were analyzed according to Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory [1]. The findings show that students used a variety of politeness strategies, including positive and negative politeness strategies. No students used the off-record strategy. The strategies used in texting junior or senior lecturers are not very much different. Students' Politeness to Lecturers in WhatsApp Application Measured Using Leech Maxim

This study aims to describe student politeness in communicating or sending messages to lecturers through the Whatsapp application. This research needs to be carried out to obtain an overview of the application of politeness principles used by students in communicating. This research is descriptive qualitative research with instrumental case studies, the instrument used is Maxim Leech. The source of this research data is student texts sent to lecturers. The research data are sentences, phrases, or words that contain aspects of politeness by Leech's politeness principles. Data retrieval uses the note-taking method, while data analysis uses the high method. The basic analysis technique is a technique for direct elements that sorts text into several categories of data forms, namely sentences, clauses, phrases, and words. The results of this study indicate that all politeness maxims are not used by students in sending student Whatsapp messages to lecturers.. From the six Maxim Leech Principles, five of them are used by students in communication. The five maxims are tact maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, generosity maxim, and agreement maxim. Communication Patterns and Student Ethics Towards Lecturers in Using Whatsapp Applications

This study aims to describe the pattern of communication and good ethics between students and lecturers in communicating via Whatsapp in accordance with morals and courtesy. The research method used is qualitative research with a descriptive approach . The process of collecting data is done by means of literature study. This method is a literature review from various sources and relevant references. From the results of the literature study above, ethics in communicating in contacting lecturers is very important to avoid misunderstandings between students and lecturers. Students must also pay attention to the format of the message to be conveyed to the lecturer. The ethics that are considered in communicating via WhatsApp with lecturers are pay attention to the right time to contact the lecturer, start the message with greetings, introduce yourself, make sure the choice of words or punctuation is good, end the message with thanks and greetings.

Politeness Strategies in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC): An Issue of University Professors and Students

This paper examines the politeness theory in the light of Austin & Searle’s speech act theory as reflected in CMC between students and their lecturers or supervisors. The study of politeness in education setting interaction has increased in last decades. However, the investigation of politeness strategies in lecturer-student interaction using WhatsApp is relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to explore politeness strategies used by a lecturer and students in virtual communication using WhatsApp during thesis consultation. The researcher applied a mixed method: qualitative and quantitative research to discover the politeness phenomena in WhatsApp interaction. The participants of the study were 10 undergraduate students of English Department, University of HKBP Nommensen, and a lecturer as their thesis consultant. The Influence of Whatsapp Application towards the Communication Ethics between Lecturers and Students

This study to discuss the influence of WhatsApp application towards the communication ethics between lecture and students. The use of greetings, polite words and the right time to communicate sometimes are still not noticed by students when communicating with their lecturers. The approach used is quantitative with survey methods, data collection techniques consisting of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation with a sample of 84 people. The independent variable (X) uses WhatsApp and variable dependent (Y) is communication ethics. Indicators are taken from CMC theory and communication principles theory. The correlation test results show there is a significant and positive influence on the use of WhatsApp application towards the communication ethics between lecturers and students. Whatsapp is an important application for students and lecturers because it is considered to be very easy, fast, and cost-effective.
