Association between Competitive Anxiety, Hardiness, and Coping Strategies: A Study of the National Handball Team

Journal of Physical Education and Sport, 2020

Competitive anxiety can have a detrimental or positive impact on the athletes’ success during the competition. It varies significantly in its strength and depends on gender, ethnicity, role, and training experience. Due to the importance of the hardiness and coping strategies for the maintenance of health and productivity, it was hypothesized that competitive anxiety could be affected by these traits as well as the anxiety trait. Relationships between competitive anxiety, hardiness, coping strategies, anxiety trait, and anxiety state are investigated within this research. Members of the national female handball team aged 22 to 35 were study participants. In total, 19 responses were included in the analysis. Russian versions of Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Sports Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT), and Personal Values Survey III-R (PVSIII-R) were used. While their hardiness scores were higher than the ones reported for non-athletes, no association between hardiness and competitive anxiety was revealed. Distancing and Escape-Avoidance coping strategies were positively correlated with anxiety traits. The negative association between Self-Controlling and Seeking Social Support was considered to be inherent for a sample on the female national handball team. It was concluded that the strength of competitive anxiety is not associated with coping strategies and hardiness. A connection between the direction of competitive anxiety with coping mechanisms and hardy attitudes can be assumed for further researches.

The Effects of a Psychological Skills Training Program on Mental Toughness of Skillful Female Volleyball Players

The present study aims to investigate the effects of a Psychological Skills Training(PST) program on mental toughness of skillful female volleyball players. The statistical population used in the study consists of two league 1 female teams in Tehran province, Iran with total members of 22 individuals. From them, 11 individuals were selected randomly for each control group and experimental group. The data related to mental toughness were collected using Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire of Sheard and Golby (2009). The subjectsof the experimental group performed psychological practices for 8 weeks, 2 sessionsa week or total of 15 sessions such that each session included 30 minutes of the program. No program for psychological skills was delivered to control group. After the 15th session, an after-test was taken through SMTQ from experimental group based on the pre-test. Statistical methods in two descriptive and inferential levels and Kolmogorov– Smirnov statistical tests and T-test were used for analyzing data. The obtained results indicated that volleyball players who participated in Psychological Skills Training program have earned meaningfully higher scores in all subscales compared to the control group. Finally, it can be concluded that a course on Psychological Skills training has a meaningful effect on mental toughness of female volleyball players.

Relationship Between Basic Personality Dimensions and Dispositional Coping Strategies in Volleyball

Facta universitatis. Series physical education and sport, 2021

Athletes' coping strategies are important factors that contribute to competitive achievement and psychological well-being. The first aim of the current study was to explore the direct and interactive effects of Five Factor personality dimensions on dispositional coping strategies. The second aim was to test the second-order factorial structure of the Dispositional Coping Inventory for Competitive Sport (DCICS). The sample included 166 female volleyball players of mean age 15.01 years (SD=.87), and mean sports experience of 4.81 years (SD=1.85). They completed the NEO-FFI inventory and DCICS. Explorative factor analyses indicated two second order solutions with high reliability coefficients: task-and emotion-oriented coping strategies. The Paired samples t-test showed that young female athletes more often apply task-oriented strategies than emotion-oriented strategies. The regression analysis showed that some Five-Factor personality dimensions independently predicted the use of higher order coping dimensions. Conscientiousness was the only positive predictor of task-oriented strategies. Neuroticism was positive and agreeableness is a negative predictor of emotion-oriented coping strategies. No interaction effects of personality dimensions on dispositional coping were founded. These findings suggest that the Five-Factor personality model can predict the coping strategies that athletes frequently use. Findings also emphasize the need for more studies aimed to investigate this complex relationship including potential moderator effects of different variables such as gender, sport experience, competitive achievement, and different sports disciplines.

A Comparative Study Of Hardiness Among Football And Judo Male College Players

2018

The psychological factors involved in athletic performance have long been of interest to athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists (Gucciardi, Gordon & Dimmock, 2009). Hardiness is a combination of attitudes that provides the necessary courage, motivation and capability to turn developmental and environmental stressors into opportunities for growth and many positive outcomes have been found to relate to measures of hardiness, such as improved psychological and physical health in the face of work and life stress, and improved sporting performance (Thomson & Morris, 2009). Kobasa et al. (1982) explored the concept of personality hardiness as a resistance resource that mediates the negative consequence of high level stress. The concept of hardiness focuses on the person that remains relatively healthy after experiencing high amounts of stressful life events. Psychological hardiness (Kobasa, 1982) is conceived of as a personality based tendency to diminish the impact of stressful life ...
