Freedom with Responsibility: Building Student’s Integrity Through a Democratic School Culture

Academic dishonesty has become an unresolved issue in the education world. Dishonesty is related to the character of integrity. This paper aims to determine the importance of the character of integrity for students, efforts to foster the character of integrity and develop a democratic school culture to create freedom of responsibility among students. Positive ways that can be done to foster student selfintegrity with diligence, honesty, and confidence when taking exams or other academic tests. Honesty is a basic value that must exist in the school environment. Honesty for oneself and honesty for others. A positive school culture that fosters democratic attitudes will promote dialogue and peaceful and non-violent ways in school and community life. A free education that is responsible is not just for bearing the consequences but is responsible for making free decisions based on a hierarchy of values, norms, and conscience.
The role of integrity in higher education

This paper argues that virtue ethics, as prominently expressed in the philosophy of Aristotle, has a crucial role in education in general and higher education in particular. Virtue ethics, which initially emerged as a rival account to deontology and consequentialism, developed from dissatisfaction with the notions of duty and obligation and their central roles in understanding morality. It also grew out of an objection to the use of rigid moral rules and principles and their application to diverse and different moral situations. Virtue ethics is character-based. The article specifically focuses on the centrality of the virtue of integrity among teachers and students in higher education. It therefore proposes shifting our attention from the ethical principles, rules, duties or obligations to virtues and character in promoting ethical behaviour.

Academic integrity is a vital pedagogical responsibility that educational institutions should explicitly address. One of the best ways to uphold academic integrity is to create a culture of academic integrity throughout the school. This is especially imperative at high schools where students develop their moral identity because students who act dishonestly at high school will likely behave accordingly in post-secondary education and ultimately be dishonest in familial and professional settings. Integrity is the quality of honesty and moral principles in a person that is carried out consistently in his life as a whole. Integrity is the personality of someone who acts consistently and intact, both in words and deeds, following values and code of ethics. Efforts to strengthen the dedication and integrity of school principals and teachers are important to prepare the Indonesian generation to enter their time by continuing to renew competencies to provide the best education services. The moral debate is used as an approach to increasing the integrity of principals. Various things related to education can be used as topics in the moral debate of the principal. All these topics must remain within the corridors of Indonesian nationality. National values become the main thing to improve the quality of school education through the leadership of the principal. This is expected to foster the value of patriotism for students.
The Understanding of Academic Integrity in Primary Schools

Integrity has always been projected as a positive value. Academic integrity is one of the key aspects of the teaching/learning process, which is connected to the principles of ethics in addition to being genuine, honest and reliable. This is the basis for sustainable knowledge as well as a prerequisite for success. The study has been developed with the aim of assessing the understanding of learners and teachers in relation to academic integrity and exploring types of academic dishonesty and the factors affecting it during the primary education stage in Latvia. The study has explored concepts of academic integrity, dishonesty in theoretical literature and binding normative documents in Latvia, as well as the factors influencing them, and the correlation with ages and character features, and forms of academic dishonesty have been discussed. The type of research design is a case study, so the results of the study are not generalizable. The empirical part is based on the survey; the participants were teachers working in the primary education stage (157) and 345 students of Grades 4-9. The results obtained show that students and teachers do not have a shared understanding about the concept of academic integrity and its importance because no common guidelines have been developed for promoting academic integrity. The data also reveal that one quarter of teachers and more than half of the surveyed students have never encountered the issue of academic integrity in their experience. The main types of academic dishonesty mentioned are verbal communication, looking at someone else's work; the main reasons noted are the lack of knowledge and skills, not enough time spent for preparing for a test and desire to obtain a good mark.

Islamic school is a place of education that is expected by many people to produce students who behave in accordance with Islamic teachings. Thus, this study investigated the character building of integrity at Islamic Senior High School in accordance with the 2013 curriculum and the obstacles faced in learning process. By using qualitative descriptive methods, this paper discusses about character building of integrity in learning Arabic at Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 20 Jakarta. The study focused on the character building of value of integrity in the curriculum, its application during the learning process, and its application outside the classroom after the learning process. Integrity data investigation in March-May 2018 edition showed that character building that are in accordance with Arabic subjects, namely sincerity, religious, discipline, honesty, responsibility, environmental and social care. Application of the value of integrity in curriculum design, learning plans and textbooks that are in accordance with the 2013 curriculum includes the appropriate character values. The integration of character values into learning activities by integrating, incorporating, and applying values is considered to be good and right in order to form, develop, and foster the character or personality of students. Application of character values outside the class which programmed activities consists of counselling and extracurricular activities that train students to develop their talents and intentions.

The changes of globalisation in the flow of education challenge teachers to wisely adapt changes to improve the delivery of existing education. Innovation in education is in line with the rapid pace of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which plays an important role in producing creative and innovative students. Teachers serve as catalysts for change for students to develop analytical, critical, and creative thinking to become skilled and competitive individuals. However, the growing issue of integrity also requires awareness among teachers of the importance of practising integrity to improve self-quality. Integrity issues in the field of education tarnish the good name of education itself and have resulted in the credibility of teachers being often disputed. The National Integrity Plan was launched in 2004 to address the problem of leakage among civil servants, including teachers. This situation results in the quality of teachers being tarnished and requires support from professional organisations in order to mobilise energy in an integrated and holistic manner to improve the quality of teachers and school performance. Based on the literature review, this article presents the Theory of Personal Psychology and Integrity Strengthening Model to evaluate the effect of integrity practises on the quality of teachers and further strengthen the level of teacher professionalism in rural areas. This theoretical framework study contributes to the management of integrity practises in schools and the
