DIGITAL NATIVES AND DIGITAL EDUCATION (original) (raw)

Let’s talk about digital learners in the digital era

This paper reports on a literature review of the concept of “Digital Natives” and related terms. More specifically, it reports on the idea of a homogeneous generation of prolific and skilled users of digital technology born between 1980 and 1994. In all, 127 articles published between 1991 and 2014 were reviewed. On the basis of the findings, there appears to be no commonly-accepted definition of a “Digital Native”. The concept varies among individuals, societies, regions and nations, and also over time. Moreover, there are a number of variables other than age that may help us understand the nature of students’ use of digital technologies. The so-called “Digital Native” literature demonstrates that despite students’ high digital confidence and digital skills, their digital competence may be much lower than those of their “digital teachers”. Given the confusion surrounding “Digital Native” and its affiliates, we propose to unify them under the concept “digital learners”.

The published article is based on the theoretical and research findings of various authors and offers a critical reflection on some selected current aspects of education in the digital world, such as the problem of digital dementia and digital intelligence, the addiction associated with it, parenting styles, the development of critical thinking and the formation of a value system. Results. Creating an analysis that explores the current challenges of education in the digital age. Analysing the selected most frequent problems of the subject matter, primarily from the point of view of ethics, sociology, and psychology, based on several researches reflecting the risks of using modern technology and digital media. Since the foundations for a child's education are laid in the family, it is precisely family education that can (un)prepare the child for entering the world of digital media and its optimal functioning in it. Cognitive value. The technologies that children and today's young people use in their daily lives affect not only their physical, but especially their psychological health, self-esteem, and critical thinking. As such, it can be beneficial for further building and developing the theory and at the same time be a basis for additional research.

Education in the digital age

Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy, 2008

In The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman (2005) argues that technology, economics, and population growth have created a global economy where competition favors countries with trained workers willing to accept low wages. The science and technology necessary to produce and sell mass-produced goods and services has spread across the globe, and the high-wage economies of developed countries reward those who can do innovative work and punish those who can not.

Does the new digital generation of learners exist? A qualitative study

British Journal of Educational Technology, 2010

This paper seeks to contribute to the discussion on the current generation of students and their relationship to technology, providing qualitative, empirical information obtained in the Chilean context. The study analyses and discusses the ideas regarding the emergence of a new generation of learners, or digital natives, as characterised by wide-ranging access to digital media and by having new skills and abilities. In-depth interviews held with students and teachers from four different cities in the country are analysed. The data shows evidence of a generation of learners without shared traits, with segments of learners presenting practices that do not characterise the entire generation. In addition, the data shows that the skills and abilities described in the literature do not represent a precise description of those that the students exploit when using technology. Beyond the ability to work simultaneously on several tasks, some learners have the ability to manage the attention that they pay to their work on the computer in sophisticated ways, and although some prefer images to words on paper, among others, there is still a taste for reading actual printed books. All in all, students and teachers describe a certain distance and conflict between the practices with the use of ICTs and their everyday school experiences.
