Introduction: Bibliometric analyses of research in Sri Lanka, a lower-middle income island nation in South Asia, has focused mainly on medical research, concluding that there is a need for increased research productivity and impact, and for local solutions to health concerns. There has been no general bibliometric analysis across scientific disciplines in the nation, or any study that covers a long period of time to identify general time trends. Objective: To measure and analyse Sri Lankan research by focusing on subjects, authors, institutions, journals and citation for half a century. Determinants of the citation rate of medical research publications from a developing country

Background: The number of citations received by an article is considered as an objective marker judging the importance and the quality of the research work. The present study aims to study the determinants of citations for research articles published by Sri Lankan authors. Methods: Papers were selectively retrieved from the SciVerse Scopus® (Elsevier Properties S.A, USA) database for 10 years from 1st January 1997 to 31st December 2006, of which 50% were selected for inclusion by simple random sampling. The primary outcome measure was citation rate (defined as the number of citations during the 2 subsequent years after publication). Citation data was collected using the SciVerse Scopus® Citation Analyzer and self citations were excluded. A linear regression analysis was performed with 'number of citations' as the continuous dependent variable and other independent variables. Result: The number of publications has steadily increased during the period of study. Over three quarter of papers were published in international journals. More than half of publications were research studies (55.3%), and most of the research studies were descriptive cross-sectional studies (27.1%). The mean number of citations within 2 years of publication was 1.7 and 52.1% of papers were not cited within the first two years of publication. The mean number of citations for collaborative studies (2.74) was significantly higher than that of non-collaborative studies (0.66). The mean number of citations did not significantly change depending on whether the publication had a positive result (2.08) or not (2.92) and was also not influenced by the presence (2.30) or absence (1.99) of the main study conclusion in the title of the article. In the linear regression model, the journal rank, number of authors, conducting the study abroad, being a research study or systematic review/meta-analysis and having regional and/or international collaboration all significantly increased the number of citations. Conclusion: The journal rank, number of authors, conducting the study abroad, being a research study or systematic review/meta-analysis and having regional and/or international collaboration all significantly increased the number of citations. However, the presence of a positive result in the study did not influence the citation rate.
Bibliometric analysis of Ceylon Medical Journal during the period from 2003 – 2012
Ceylon Medical Journal (CMJ) is the premier and oldest medical journal in Sri Lanka. Bibliometric studies on single journals are useful to find out the research trend in a discipline and publication trend of the journal. The objective of the study was to conduct a bibliometric study of CMJ. The study sought to identify co-authorship pattern, geographical distribution of authors, productive institutions, prolific authors, productive articles and the impact of the research work published in CMJ during the study period. The required data of all the selected articles published from 2003 to 2012, related to the analysis were collected from Scopus database. The collected data were analyzed in terms of bibliometric parameters by MS excel 2007 and Bibexcel. The study revealed multi authored articles occupy prominent position indicating cooperative research work. Three author contributions was the highest ranked authorship pattern. Majority (90%) of the authors publishing articles in CMJ were from Sri Lanka. The most prolific author contributed 18 articles during the study period. The most productive article received 57 citations recorded in SCOPUS database. University of Colombo and University of Kelaniya were leading institutions in publishing articles in CMJ during the study period. The study highlighted some research trends in health sciences and publishing trends of CMJ. The country distribution of authors showed that the journal reflects the research and views of health researchers mainly from Sri Lanka. The study provides suggestions to improve the impact of the research articles published in CMJ.

The present study has examined 29153 publications in medicine research, the present study deals with the Assessment of Indian medicine research output as reflected in Web of Science (WOS) database for the period 2009 to 2018 for identifying the research output in the field of medicine literature. It also provides a comparative evaluation and performance of different types of scientometric indicators, such as number of publications, number of citations, relative growth, doubling time, activity index and collaboration from India. The Indian medicine research has increased exponentially over the last decade.

Objective: This study analyzes the research activities of India in biomedicine during 2012– 2016, based on the total publication output, its growth rate, quality of papers published and rank of India in the global context. Patterns of international collaborative research output and the major partner institutions of India are also discussed. This study also evaluates the research performance of different types of Indian biomedical and research foundations and the characteristics of published literature in Indian and foreign journals. It also analyzes the medical research output by disease and organs. Materials and Methods: The publication data on biomedicine has been retrieved by using Web of Science (WoS) database. Results: total number of 2712 publications as indexed in web of science database during 2012-2016. The results show that there insignificant growth in Biomedicine literature published from India. It may be researcher, institutions or India’s collaboration with other countries, in all aspects considerable growth can be observed Conclusion: High quality research in India is grossly inadequate and requires strategic planning, investment and resource support. There is also a need to improve the existing biomedical education system, which should foster research culture.
BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF COVID-19 RESEARCH IN SRI LANKA: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of COVID-19 research conducted in Sri Lanka. The research landscape is explored through the lens of bibliometrics, examining scholarly publications to understand the quantity, quality, and collaborative networks within the scientific community. Utilizing bibliographic databases, we identified a substantial body of literature related to COVID-19 originating from Sri Lanka. The analysis encompasses key bibliometric indicators, such as publication trends, authorship patterns, citation impact, and collaborative networks. Through this examination, we aim to provide insights into the evolution of COVID-19 research in Sri Lanka, highlight influential contributors, and identify potential areas for future exploration. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the scientific response to the pandemic within the Sri Lankan context and offer valuable perspectives for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in public health and scientific collaboration. This research employs the Web of Science database to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of COVID-19 research in Sri Lanka. Leveraging the rich dataset available on this platform, we systematically examine publication trends, authorship characteristics, citation patterns, and collaborative networks within the context of Sri Lankan contributions to the global discourse on COVID-19. Our analysis covers a range of bibliometric indicators to assess the quantity and impact of research output, identify influential authors and institutions, and explore international collaborations. By utilizing the Web of Science database, this study provides a robust and nuanced understanding of the scientific landscape surrounding COVID-19 in Sri Lanka. The insights gleaned from this research can inform future strategies for scientific collaboration, resource allocation, and policymaking in the ongoing fight against the pandemic.

Universities play a vital role in the research and development of a country. A scientometric analysis is an essential tool used by the administrators, funding agencies, government, and researchers to know the publication trend on a topic, institution, author, journal, etc. This study analyses pattern of articles published by the University of Jaffna (UoJ) during 2000-2019; identifies publication growth rate, most prolific authors and their citation impact, communication pattern in terms of type of documents, journal publishing country and impact factor of these journals and also the international collaboration. Analysis of the data indicates, there are 293 articles were published in WOS indexed journals. The publication growth rate indicates that there is a consistent growth in the number of publications after 2014. It was found that multi-authorship dominates among UoJ researchers. In this article we provide a scientometric comparison between two health and population research organizations, namely the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) and the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) in India, during the period 1979-2008. We study these two institutes because they conduct similar research and because of their collaboration ties. Data are collected from the Web of Science (WoS) as well as from official records of these two organizations. The analysis presents the evolution of publication activities. Special attention is given to research impact through time series of the institutional h- and R-indices, as well as to the trend in yearly citations received. Types of publications, international collaboration with other countries, top scientists and most cited articles co-authored by scientists from these institutions are highlighted. It is observed that female scientists play a minor role in these two institutes.
Scientometric study of Research literature output by Madras Medical College during1989 -2018

Madras Medical College is the one of well-known premier medical institution, situated in Chennai. The data was collected using PubMed database during 1989-2018, there are 646 Publications were found. Analyzed for year wise growth shows 53(8.20%) Publications found during 1989-1993 and Highest 283(43.81%) Publication found during 2014-2018 Authorship pattern shows single author have contributed 35(5.42%), multi author have contributed 611 articles, the mean relative growth rate is 0.0835 and mean doubling time is 14.65. The author preferred Language for publication is found to be English, now a days peoples are facing various health problems the postgraduates and faculties should publish their research papers in a Indexed Journals to share their knowledge to the fellow researchers and the funding agencies should encourage the researcher to do their research on current trend on health and diseases.
