Studying Crisis Communication: New Theories and Methodologies
The seminar, which spans over three days and is aimed at doctoral students within the social sciences and the humanities, is divided into two parts. Part (I) consists of an advanced presentation and discussion of recent crisis management and crisis communication research. The focus is on how the discipline of crisis management has developed from a narrow to a broad perspective, and from a simple broad to a complex broad perspective; and how crisis communication has moved from a rhetorical and text-oriented approach to a more strategic and context-oriented approach with a view to allied fields such as risk communication, issues management and reputation management. A special interest is devoted to international crises and the role of the new social media. Part (II) consists of an advanced introduction to the methodologies of crisis communication including both quantitative methodologies and research techniques (experimental designs, content analysis, and surveys) and qualitative methodologies and research techniques (especially case studies as a research design). The seminar also includes a one-day long case study-based workshop focusing on theory building. The financial crisis in Europe and the United States, the war in Syria, the refugee crisis, and terrorist attacks – crises seem to permeate everyday life and make headlines. Crisis as a central, persistent element of modern life has been the subject of scholarly discussions in various disciplines. Political communication research approaches crisis from two different angles. First, political crisis communication research deals with communication about political crises, such as political upheavals, protests, and subversions of governments and presidents. One of the most recent examples of a political crisis comes from Venezuela, where political changes and problems, such as corruption and undemocratic governance, have brought about economic problems (hyperinflation), a rising crime rate, hunger, and disease. Crisis communication characteristics and errors: A case study

In 2006, events surrounding the University of Geneva led to the resignation of its executive board, and a political reform of the institution. This case constitutes a typical example of where a crisis is strengthened, and even created, by inappropriate information-management. Such situations, in which material damages and personal harm are generally quite limited, are increasingly frequent and have a particularly important impact on public trust in political and administrative institutions. The main aim of this paper is to identify the characteristics of this type of crisis, and errors linked to it from a media-communications perspective. This will be done through an analysis of publications in four different newspapers, as well as of official documents and statements from the period during which the crisis took place and in the months that followed. This paper does not aim to examine the institutional or organisational causes and issues or the actions of the various people involved in this particular crisis. Appropriate information addressed to the public is one of the basic conditions for both prevention and resolution of crisis situations. Its main relay is mass media, with the help of which it is easiest to reach the recipient. There are rules that condition proper communication in crisis situations, media representatives are also expected to have specific foundations. Proper cooperation with the media may be a factor supporting the activities of the state in crisis situations. The article presents both general content as well as specific solutions applied in the field of communication with the media in crisis situations in the Republic of Poland.
A quantitative review of crisis communication research in public relations from 1991 to 2009

This study quantitatively examines 18 years (1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)) of data, 66 published articles, from the crisis communication domain in public relations using Coombs' situational crisis communication theory and Benoit's image restoration theory as the theoretical foundation for analysis. Overall recommendations indicate crisis communication research in public relations may be enriched both theoretically and pragmatically through more diverse contextual and methodological applications and could be less descriptive and more prescriptive through richer scholarly commentary and criticism in support for the models.

This assignment aims to read into the way the British authorities handled in communication terms the terrorist attacks in London in 7.7.2005. For this purpose, the paper will start with a timeline of the events that unfolded before and after the incident(s). Afterwards, it will depict the actors that were considered as key players in the crisis communication process, the messages they sought to clarify, the audiences they were referring to, the communication channels that were employed towards this direction, the audiences they were referring to and the politically “thorny” issues that were at stake. Finally, it will assess according to the developed literature the performance of certain key actors.

Effective communication and good communication skills are indispensable factors of success in all interpersonal social, political and business relationships, and their importance is particularly manifested in various types of crisis situations. The perception of how complex and dangerous a particular crisis may be, and the trust placed in those responsible for its resolution, will largely depend on their communication skills and the manner in which the communication process is managed during the crisis. Various types of crisis situations require specific ways to communicate and different communication strategies, so the communication process needs to be managed. The purpose of this paper is to describe the role of communication skills and to emphasize the importance of managing the communication process in order to avoid or at least minimize obstacles in communicating with target audiences in crisis situations.

As we enter a new era marked by changing values, driven by disruptive technologies and leading to the erosion of trust, organizations today are facing crises at greater frequency than in the past. Transformation is a phenomenon that appears to have taken place in each and every period of history, but it has never been as rapid, comprehensive, and unpredictable as we observe it today. There are an increasing number of people who name the era that we currently live in as the post-truth era where the focus is on narratives, their significance, and their abilities of persuasion, rather than focusing on presenting knowledge or the truth. Causality, or the rational paradigm, that was defended by modernism, does not seem to have enough prowess to interpret today's complexity and phenomena. This perspective and transformation are also valid for at organizations that encounter crises. This article gives a theoretical framework for scrutinising how organizations deal with obstacles within post-truth times. It suggests that the value-based and emotionally-driven framework of the narrative paradigm might be the most powerful communication approach adopted by an organization during a corporate crisis in this new era.
