Basic Color Terms in the Glorious Qur’an
Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Colour plays a key role in people’s communication. Languages represent the gradation of colours in nature by a series of discrete categories. These categories of colour differ along with the different cultures. Colour distinctions and meanings also play a major role in different religions. A certain colour may have a particular meaning in Christianity and another different meaning. There is no single language is said to include all colour variations. Colour distinctions and meanings play a major role in different religions. A certain colour may have a particular meaning in Christianity and another different meaning. This paper aims at identifying the basic colour terms in the Glorious Qur'an and making structural and semantic analyses of them. It is hypothesized that the Glorious Qur’an contains particular colour terms that occupy various grammatical classes and indicates specific functions. Furthermore, some are linked to each other by semantic relations. The major findings arr...
Foreignising versus Domesticating Translations of Arabic Colour-related Expressions
Journal of Language Teaching and Research
The present study attempts to focus on the translation of colour-related idioms and binomials as culture-specific expressions and questions the validity of the notions of foreignisation and domestication brought to the fore of translation studies by Venuti (1995). However, it is not intended here to question the quality of Venuti’s advocacy of foreignising translation, but rather to apply the notions of foreignisation and domestication, as well as paraphrase as one mode of domestication in translating colour-related expressions. More particularly, the study examines whether it is possible to observe any form of consistency in the strategies used for the translation of such culturally-bound expressions. This is attempted under the framework of the skopos theory and Berlin/Key studies on colours (1969). The paper describes already-existing translations in order to make generalizations about translation methods. Such generalization may be taken as guidelines for the translation of cult...
Color Idiomatic Expressions in the Translation
Colors play a vital role in people's communication. They do not only express the colors themselves, but are also endowed with cultural characteristics of each nation. In other words, colors in different languages and cultures may convey different associative meaning and people from different cultures react to colors in different ways. The aim of this study is to investigate the translation of color idiomatic expressions from Arabic into English in Naguib Mahfouz's novel " The Thief and the Dogs " and to what extent is color idiomatic expressions retained, wasted and distorted. Moreover, the study aims at exploring the different translation strategies applied in translating color idiomatic expressions in this novel and finding out the similarities and differences between their meaning in both languages. The study mainly focuses on the most common colors: black, white, yellow, red, green and blue. For the purpose of the study, a number of Arabic idiomatic expressions along with their equivalents in English were gathered from the novel and were contrastively studied side-by-side with their translations.
This paper deals with some semantic, stylistic and cultural problems of translation and offers modest solutions to each. Among the semantic problems discussed are homonymy; polysemy; and little knowledge of semantic change and its types including semantic generalization, specification, melioration and pejoration. The stylistic problems offered include: clarity, ellipsis, redundancy and extraposition. As regards the cultural problems discussed, they cover the problems underlying the translation of idioms, proverbs and culture-bound words.
The Translation of Qur'anic Lexical Ambiguity
Journal of Arts and Humanities, 2020
Lexical items constitute paramount problems in the translation of Quran from Arabic into English. This study deals with only one the semantic problematic areas in Surah AL-An’am (The cutle) in the Quran, namely ambiguity. It explores the translation of Qur’anic ambiguity. The current study focuses on the issue of translating ambiguous word in the Quran, particularly in the Surah AL-An’am. It attempts to analyse and compare six different approaches to to retaining the meaning of the Quran while translating it into English. The translators are Pichthall (1930), Ali (1942), Asad (1980), Khattib (1986), Malik (1997) and Al-Hilali/Khan (1417). Their translations of the Quran have been reprinted worldwide. However, the study does not attempt to evaluate the six translations but rather to investigate the types of lexical problem that they encounter based on the Quran exegesis of Ibn-Kathir and Al-Tabariari, Al-Jalâlin and Al-Qurtabi. The findings of the study provide empirical evidence tha...
Translating Connotative Meaning in the Translation of the Holy Quran: Problems and Solutions
Connotative meaning is one of the most challenging aspects in translation, especially between two different cultures such as English and Arabic. The problem is more aggravated when the translation occurs from a sacred and sophisticated text such as the Holy Quran. As a result, losses in translation occur. This study, therefore, is an attempt to identify the losses in the translation of connotative meaning in the Holy Quran, propose strategies to reduce such losses, and identify the causes of such losses. For this purpose, seven examples were extracted from the Holy Quran and were qualitatively analysed. The analysis of the extracted data revealed that connotative meaning was quite challenging in translation and losses occurred. These problems in preserving the connotative meaning of the source text (ST) word or playing it down are due to two main causes: the first cause is the lack of equivalence, while the second one is the translator's failure to pick the most appropriate equivalent. Non-equivalence problems were mainly represented in lack of lexicalization, semantic complexity, culturally-bound terms, difference in expressive meaning, and difference in distinction of meaning between the source language (SL) and the target language (TL). Some strategies were suggested to reduce such loss in the translation of connotative meaning. These strategies include footnoting, transliteration, periphrastic translation, and accuracy of selecting the proper equivalent that can be achieved by triangulation procedures such as peer-checking and expert-checking.
Formal and Functional Meanings in the Glorious Quran with Reference to Translation
The research tackles formal and functional meanings in the Glorious Qur'an with reference to translation. It aims at studying how translators deal with these meanings in their renderings, and based on the accredited Qur'anic interpretations, it tries to clarify the Qur'anic verses, as far as these meanings are concerned. It is hypothesized that unless a fine distinction is made between formal and functional meanings, erroneous translation will result. Analyzing different translations of the Glorious Qur'an, it is realized that taking these meanings into consideration plays a significant role in achieving better understanding on the part of the TL reader. Thus, revising these translations is recommended.
Lexical and semantic problems in translating the Quran
Translatologia , 2020
The study examines a number of Lexical and Semantic Problems arguing that literal translation may sometimes deform the implicit meaning of the lexical items, metaphors, and metonymic words found in the Quran and free translation is more suitable way of conveying their connotative meanings.
Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, 2019
The current study aims to investigate the possible inconsistencies and incongruities that exist in the translation of metaphoric expressions of Qur'anic verses in the English. The analysis has been conducted through the comparison of prominent English translators of Quran such as Mohammed A.S Abdel Haleem, Mohammed. M Pickthall and Mohammed Khan and Mohammed Taj Al-Din Al-Hilal. Also, the study aims to explore how the three translators deal with the metaphoric expressions in their renditions of the Holy Quran. This endeavor is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of English translations of the Quran, particularly in the context of English readers for non-Arabic Muslims in particular, where euphemisms are concerned. The primary purpose of the present study is to examine the extent to which the three translators are accurate in translating the Qur'anic metaphors into English based upon the contexts and the interpretive meaning. It is hypothesized in this paper that Qu'...
Purpose-The present paper aims at defining and analyzing the techniques, strategies, and challenges in translating the euphemism of two English interpretations of the Holy Quran. The first is the translation of Abdullah Yusuf Ali (14 April 1872-10 December 1953), whereas the second is the translation of Arthur John Arberry (12 May 1905-2 October 1969). Design/methodology/approach-The study adopts a qualitative approach that is introduced through a theoretical framework thatdiscusses and elaborates on the term "euphemism". After that, the study uses analytical approaches in order to define and analyze the techniques and strategies in translating the euphemism of two English interpretations of the Holy Quran. Findings-The results elaborate on the techniques used by the two translators to translate the euphemisms of two English interpretations of the Holy Quran. Originality/value-The reason for selecting these two translations is to find the different techniques and approaches of both Eastern and Western translators. The main analysis of the study is based on Newmark's perceptions about the techniques and strategies of translation.
