The paper contains a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the news services of the three largest broadcasters and three events essential for the functioning of the state and public life in Poland. The first one was the amendment to the Supreme Court Act of July 2017. The second event was the local elections campaign in Poland (broadcasts aired on the 18th of October 2018, the last but one day of the elections campaign), while the third set of material were the news items on the murder of the Mayor of Gdańsk-Paweł Adamowicz (broadcasts aired on the 15th of January 2019, one day after the tragic event). The analysis focused on the evening news editions by the three most popular broadcasters with the highest viewership, including commercial stations (i.e. TVN's Fakty and Polsat's Wydarzenia) and the public broadcaster (i.e. the Polish Television's Wiadomości). In total, 43 news items of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 6 seconds were analysed. The study has revealed a clear polarisation of news content coming from the licensed broadcasters and the public service broadcaster.
Public Television in Poland Political Pressure and Public Service Media in a Post- communist Country

This book examines the professional activity of public television journalists in Poland operating in the still unstable system of a postcommunist state, to demonstrate how the media can work in the public interest to strengthen democracy. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Telewizja Polska (TVP) journalists, the author shows how public television in Poland has become highly politicised and commercialised, and must defend against constant attacks on its autonomy. She draws parallels with the media systems in Hungary and the Czech Republic to analyse potential legal solutions and to highlight how Poland's journalists are subject to influences from the political class as well as from the market-a situation brought about by flawed legislation, the absence of a political culture, an inefficient internal regulating process and lack of suitable training for the journalists themselves. Adding an important perspective on recently developed media systems, this book will be an important resource for scholars and students of journalism, media studies, media industries, politics and media history. Agnieszka Węglińska is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Communication, the Faculty of Applied Studies at the University of Lower Silesia, Poland. Politicisation of the polish media or mediatisation of polish politics?

Today the mass media are referred to as ‘the fourth estate’. It did not take long for them to be elevated to this position and calling them this term puts them on a par with the other three types of power. Strong dependence is thus present between the political and the media systems. Therefore, it seems reasonable to pose the following questions: Which is currently exerting greater influence – the media on politics or maybe politics on the media? Are we dealing with the mediatisation of Polish politics or politicisation of the Polish media? These are just a few questions that come up with regard to the relationships between these two spheres of life. The purpose of this article is to differentiate and describe the levels on which the realms of Polish politics and the media meet, confront each other and cooperate. It is therefore necessary to examine the legal framework for the mass media, the interference of Polish politicians in the shaping and functioning of the institution controlling and regulating the Polish media – Krajowa Rada Radiofonii i Telewizji [the National Broadcasting Council], as well as to draw attention to the agenda-setting theory and the role journalists play in relations with politicians.

The media landscape in Poland is increasingly polarised, with broadcasters promoting biased narratives that conveniently omit certain issues that do not align with their agenda. These narratives use rhetorical devices and symbolism to manipulate people’s perception of social reality and cultivate a shared worldview that legitimises their stance. This polarisation is linked to political parallelism, where media outlets align themselves with specific political factions and abandon their impartiality. In Poland, identity media is prevalent, with broadcasters providing pre-packaged interpretations of news stories that further fuel the polarisation. It creates echo chambers, also known as epistemic bubbles. The study examined news coverage from Wiadomości TVP and Fakty TVN, analysing the narratives presented and the values and topics covered. The media in Poland: Five years after the breakdown

One day later, the Act took effect. An immediate replacement of the Polish TV and Polish Radio Boards and Supervisory Boards members followed. The principle which formed the basis of the regulatory philosophy of this system and has been in force since the early 1990s was also questioned, i.e. that the government's authority over public media is exercised by an authority other than that directly subordinate to the government or a part of it. What has happened in Poland with respect to the public media proves the media's position vis a vis the authorities and the politics typical for the Central and Eastern Europe where the deeply rooted traditional media philosophy has still been in force in line with the well-established behavioural patterns connected with the post-authoritarian culture; the degree varying from country to country. Ironically, the latter facilitates the development, in Central and Eastern Europe, of the phenomenon named "Italianisation of the media". 1 The notion occurred in 1980s as a result of the then developed model of the Italian media. Th is paper addresses the place of Poland's public television network, Telewizja Polska (TVP) within the country's media system. Th e role of journalists is an important element of public media. In an author view Poland's public media as part of a system of polarised pluralism, as described in Daniel Hallin and Paolo Mancini's classifi cation. Th e main aspect of this research is that of TVP's transformation in its approach to technology. Journalists who started working in the 1990s have diff erent attitudes from younger staff to the network's public objectives. Th ey are usually less competent in new media and less concerned about technological convergence and social media. Th e research involved unstructured interviews with TVP journalists.
Towards illiberal conditioning? New politics of media regulations in Poland (2015–2018)

In this article, we examine how media policy changes aid dedemocratisation in Poland. Unfolding the logic underpinning the new politics of media regulations, this article argues that media policy paints a nuanced picture of democratic backsliding. Our Foucault-inspired discourse analysis of media policy archive focuses on the rise of illiberal trends at the crossroads of the Polish hybrid media system, democracy and society. We find these trends display the features of centralisation of power, cultural politics, political partisanship and social polarisations. We explain these notions, using the concepts of "executive aggrandisement" and "politicisation" of public service media sector.
The goal of the study is to verify, based on empirical data, the agenda setting, framing and priming theoretical conclusions and to utilize them as interpretative narratives on the pre-election period of media discourse on Polish TV. Then the question washow the media set the agenda, which frames they used to make news interpretation, and what was/were the most accessible real problems/issues, that conditioned party/candidate assessment (if at all) and at last -which (if at all) would have been the consequences of the mentioned above media reporting towards political process? The empirical base of investigation were TV news programs in Polish both public (TVP1 -"Wiadomości) and commercial TV (TVN -"Fakty").
Election coverage in Poland 2005: A content analysis of the main TV news programs
The paper presents results of empirical research of election coverage in Poland 2005. The case of correlation of media content and public pools is described. The author is going to confirm the functioning of an agenda-setting mechanism in the Polish TV news programs. Directions of use of public pools and methods of presentation of outcomes were analyzed.
