Sarcocornia A. J. Scott is a halophytic edible succulent plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. To date, the genus includes 28 species distributed worldwide in saline environments, usually salt marshes. Sarcocornia (Scott) is similar to Salicornia (L.), which has a recognized commercial value in morphological and taxonomical traits. Species of both genera are commonly named samphire or glassworts in Europe, and their fleshy shoots are commercialized under their traditional names. Due to their nutritional, organoleptic and medicinal properties, Sarcocornia species have a high economic potential in various biotechnology sectors. Being highly tolerant to salt, they can be cultivated in saline conditions, and dissimilar to Salicornia, they are perennial, i.e., they can be harvested year-round. Sargassum Vulgare was collected from the Red sea coastlines, Al-Hodeida, Yemen, and dried. The dried powder was subjected to consecutive extraction by methanol. The dried methanol extract was subjected to solvent fractionation (n-hexane-chloroform-ethyl acetate and n-butanol solvents). Sargassum vulgare polysaccharides (S.R1P, S.R1M, S.R5s, and S.R5ss) were isolated by precipitation with methanol. [19] The methanol extract and n-hexane fraction were evaluated phytochemically. Increasing soil salinisation represents a serious threat to food security, and therefore the exploitation of high-yielding halophytes, such as Salicornia and Sarcocornia, needs to be considered not merely in arid regions but worldwide. In this study, Salicornia ramosissima and Sarcocornia perennis alpini were evaluated for nutrients, bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, and contaminants. Both were shown to be nutritionally relevant, exhibiting notable levels of crude fibre and ash, i.e., 11.26–15.34 and 39.46–40.41% dry weight (dw), respectively, and the major minerals were Na, K, and Mg. Total phenolics thereof were 67.05 and 38.20 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g extract dw, respectively, mainly p-coumaric acid and quercetin. Both species displayed antioxidant capacity, but S. ramossima was prominent in both the DPPH and ß-carotene bleaching assays. The current study estimated the antioxidant activity and biochemical composition of four seaweeds; Toania atomaria (Phaeophyta), Padina pavonia (Phaeophyta), Jania rubens (Rhodophyta) and Corallina elongate (Rhodophyta). The highest total antioxidant activity was observed with ethanol extract of T. atomaria (44.6 ± 1.6 mg ascorbic acid equivalents/g crude extract). Among the four seaweeds, ethanol extract of T. atomaria has recorded the highest value in ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay (32.3 ± 0.0 mg ascorbic acid equivalents/g crude extract). The uppermost level of carbohydrates was (20.4% ± 0.4 and 19.5% ± 0.7 dry wt.) in P. pavonia and T. atomaria. Proteins were maximum (10.5% ± 0.6 and 8.0% ± 0.0 dry wt.) in P. pavonia and T. atomaria. The results detected that T. atomaria had the largest amounts of lipids (5.92% ± 0.09 dry wt.). The polyunsaturated ω6 essential fatty acids were recorded in T.atomaria, P. pavonia, and J. rubens (11.39%, 8.09%, and 6.28%), and ω3 essential fatty acids were recorded in T. atomaria and P. pavonia (0.65% and 0.97%). The seaweeds are interesting candidates for medicinal, pharmaceutical, and nutritional applications owing to their antioxidant activities, biochemical composition; they are not widespread in the coastal waters of Egypt and has few studies, especially T. atomaria.

The effects of different conditioning treatments (fresh, freezing, freeze-drying, oven-drying and greenhousedrying) on the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities of two brown algae, Sargassum muticum and Bifurcaria bifurcata, were investigated and compared. Phenolic compounds were extracted in a methanol/water (50:50) solution, and TPC was measured by the colorimetric Folin-Ciocalteu assay. Antioxidant activity was assessed by the DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay and the b-carotene bleaching method. The dried seaweeds showed lower phenolic contents and lower antioxidant capacities than the fresh and frozen ones, which suggests that the phenolic content and antioxidant activities are decreased by the drying treatments, especially, oven-and greenhouse-drying. Relationships between TPC, antioxidant properties and conditioning treatments are discussed.
Non-enzymatic antioxidants content in several species collected from salt marshes from Dobrogea
Salt tolerant plants have been the subject of different studies about the mechanisms of salt tolerance at biochemical level. They developed different mechanisms to cope with abiotic stress effects, also by increasing antioxidant activity. Results of this study include polyphenols and flavonoids contents from several species: Plantago lanceolata L., P. coronopus L., P. maritima L. (Plantaginaceae), and Spergularia media (L.) C. Presl (Caryophyllaceae), during vegetative and flowering time. The plant material has been collected from salt marshes located in Dobrogea region (Sulina, Murighiol and Histria). The level of non-enzymatic antioxidant compounds measured in both vegetative and flowering stages in almost all locations generally show higher values for Plantago species compared with Spergularia.

Biochemical constituents and master elements (Pb, Cr, Cd, Fe, Cu, Zn, Hg, B, Al, SO42-, Na, K, Li, Ca, Mg, and F) were investigated in six different seaweed species from Abu Qir Bay in the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea coast. The moisture level ranged from 30.26% in Corallina mediterranea to 77.57% in Padina boryana. On dry weight basis, the ash contents varied from 25.53% in Jania rubens to 88.84% in Sargassum wightii. The protein contents fluctuated from 8.26% in S. wightii to 28.01% in J. rubens. Enteromorpha linza showed the highest lipids (4.66%) and carbohydrate contents (78.95%), whereas C. mediterranea had the lowest lipid (0.5%), and carbohydrate contents (38.12%). Chlorophylls and carotenoid contents varied among the species. Seaweeds possess considerable potential for developing and enhancing pharmaceutical drugs because of their wide variety as abundant sources of numerous bioactive secondary metabolites, making them well-suited for developing and enhancing pharmaceutical drugs. This study evaluated the antioxidant, secondary metabolites, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content of various crude extracts (methanol, ethanol) and their fractions (50 % and 70 %) of Sargassum polycystum. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis was also performed to identify the active chemical composition of the crude extracts. The results showed that various extracts contained varying concentrations of terpenoid, saponin, phlobatannin, cardiac glycosides, phenolic, and flavonoid. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of phenols, carboxylic acid, ketones, ethers, aromatics, amides, and sulfonates. 100 % methanolic extract contained the maximum concentrations of total phenols (80.13 mg of GAE/ g) and total flavonoids (38.33 mg of quercetin/g). 100 % methanol extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay (78.32 %, IC50 = 1.59 mg/ml) and ABTS assay (69.82 %, IC50 = 2.39 mg/ml). The biofunctional activity of crude extracts depended on their extract and concentration. The present study demonstrates that the macroalgae S. polycystum contains noteworthy secondary metabolites and natural antioxidants, indicating their potential utilization in various pharmacological and functional food applications.
