Insights into the Behaviour of Rural Indians An Attempt to Discover Views on Education and Development

The paper examines rural Indians' perspectives on education and related aspects of life. This population has its own notions, practices, judgments, and opinions, which are often the results of their historical experiences, traditional living style, and cultural values and practices. With the awakening of development, education has become one of the most crucial factors of quality living. Fortunately, even rural India has started accepting the change and the wave of education and development. Yet there is a long way to go. Keeping the same in mind, this research provides an overview of the mentality, psychology, beliefs, and thoughts of the people related to education and development in rural India. The research develops around the survey conducted in a rural village of North India (Uttar Pradesh), which collected the opinions and views people hold on subjects related to education and development in rural India. The indifference for schooling because of high expenditures, gender bias on the educational front, lack of parental motivation for quality and higher education, irregular attendance at schools, and low aspirations among villages because of poverty dynamics are some of the findings that the paper discusses. Furthermore, the collected data of the survey provides a peek into the lives of rural people, who form almost 65% of the population, with an emphasis on the rural developmental factors.

Involvement of rural youth in agricultural activitiesin Ludhiana district of Punjab, India

The study aimed at specifying the involvement of rural youth in agricultural activities. The rural youth were actively involved in production and marketing activities bit empirical data to support it was lacking on their participation. The study has been conducted on a sample of 120 rural youth who were already engaged in agriculture from randomly selected six village of Ludhiana district. The data was collected through personal interview schedule. The interview schedule composed of two parts: one for personal characteristics and, the second, information about their involvement in agricultural activities in different crops. The schedule consisted of common field activities. Against each activity, it was designed to obtain responses as fully involved, partially involved/supervised and not involved. India is a youth country and rural youth constitute about 41% of the total population of India. In the present scenario, the interest of rural people especially rural youth towards agriculture is decreasing. India is an agricultural country or it would not be wrong to say that India lives in villages. Of this, about 70% were rural youth and the remaining 30% were urban youth. In the present study Bhanupratappur block, Kanker district (Chhattisgarh) was deliberately selected. A stratified random sampling procedure was followed to obtain a suitable sample of rural youth. The total sample size was 70. The dependent variable was the participation of rural youth in agricultural activities. 12.85 percent had low level of participation in agricultural activities and size of family was did not any association with the extent of participation in agricultural activities.

Factors influencing the involvement in non-agricultural income generating activities of rural youth: A case study in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India

Many rural youth are faced with difficulty of maintaining livelihoods and consequently, poverty remains pervasive among them. The importance of income generating activities to rural livelihood cannot be overemphasized. The paper examined the involvement of rural youth in non-agricultural income generating activities as well as factors influencing their involvement in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Multi stage random sampling was used to collect data from 247 respondents. Respondents participated in number of non-agricultural income generating activities with petty trade being the most common. Majority of respondents were married, educated up to high school had low achievement motivation and medium economic motivation. There were significant influences of socioeconomic and psychological characteristics of respondents on their involvement in non-agricultural income generating activities (R 2 =0.582). Marital status (t=4.284), family occupation (t=3.668), respondents' education (t=-4.705), employment status (t=3.607), rural life preference (t=3.102), achievement motivation (t=5.853), economic motivation (t=5.358), fatalism-scienticism (t=-5.197), mass media exposure (t=6.998) and extension contact (t=-4.698) were predictors of involvement in non-agricultural income generating activities engaged by rural youth at 1 percent significant level while 1/3 of the total accountable variation was explained by achievement motivation. Governmental and nongovernmental organizations should take all income generating activities engaged in by rural youth as well as the identified factors influencing them into consideration when initiating and embarking on programmes targeted at improving their livelihoods.

The Role of Youth in Rural Development (Case Study: in Torgamba Sub-district of South Labuhanbatu District

This type of research is a descriptive study that analyzes the role of youth in rural community development in Torgamba District, South Labuhanbatu. This study aims to analyze the role of youth and the influence of youth roles in rural community development in the District of Torgamba. This research is done by quantitative approach through survey. The population of this study are youth who live in 14 villages in Torgamba sub-district, South Labuhanbatu regency. Researchers determine the number of samples in this study amounted to 56 respondents by the distribution of sampling evenly in each village. The result of this research is the role of youth in Torgamba sub-district has a very positive influence and the influence of youth role from Economic aspect, education and Infrastructure simultaneously have positive effect in increasing rural community development. CONSTRAINTS FACED BY RURAL YOUTH FOR ACHIEVING THEIR OCCUPATIONAL ASPIRATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS TO OVERCOME IT

The present study was conducted in Latur district of Marathwada region of Maharashtra state. There were ten tehsils in Latur district out of which Latur, Chakur, and Renapur tehsils were selected randomly. For the purpose of the study, four villages from each selected tehsil were selected. Thus, total twelve villages were selected from three tehsils for the study. From each selected village, ten male youth were selected randomly. In this way, a total number of male youths 120 were considered as respondents for the present study. These selections of respondents done by using simple random sampling method for the purpose of the study. Careful examination of the results revealed that, majority of the rural youth expressed that low family income, lack of timely information about opportunities, government policies are not reach to grassroot level, no family support and lack of proper guidance as reported by 70.83 percent,70.00 percent,67.50 percent,65.00 per cent and 55.83 per cent respectively, followed by lack of training facilities (49.17%) and low literacy level in rural area (43.33%).majority (70.83%) of respondents suggested that adequate fund should be provided to needy people followed by, timely information should be provided (70.00%), government policies should reach to grassroot level (67.50%).

Determinants of Rural Youth’s Participation in Agricultural Activities: The Case of Kahe East

Though youth have desirable qualities that can promote agriculture, most of them have strong apathy toward it. This has resulted in mass unemployment and lack of sustainable livelihood among youth. With fewer youth into agriculture, the long term future of agriculture sector is in question. The study aimed at finding out on the role played by agriculture to rural youth socio-economic needs, types of agricultural activities which are engaged by rural youth and the factors which influence rural youth participation in agriculture. SOCIO-PERSONAL CORRELATES OF PARTICIPATION IN LIVELIHOOD ACTIVITIES AMONG RURAL YOUTH IN JABALPUR DISTRICT OF MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA

The increasing realization of the negative political, social and economic consequences stemming from the precariousness of youth’s livelihoods, underscores the need to understand their livelihood activities, which is a requisite for curbing social ills and reducing rural poverty. The paper examined the participation of rural youth in livelihood activities, their socio-personal characteristics, the relationship between their socio-personal characteristics and their participation in livelihood activities as well as the interrelationships among their socio-personal characteristics. Multi-stage random sampling was used to collect data from 247 respondents through interview schedule. Frequency counts and percentages were used to present data while Pearson product moment correction (PPMC) was used to test relationships. The results revealed that majority of the respondents were from other backward caste (66%), married (72.10%), belonged to joint (57.90%) and medium (50.60%) size families as well as families that were self-employed in agriculture (59.50%). Higher percentages of the respondents and their fathers were educated up to higher school and above. Huge majority (75.71%) of the respondents participated in cereal production while more than half of the respondents were involved in pulse production (56.28%) and petty trading (53.44%). Marital status; fathers’ educational attainment; family type and family size had significant relationship with participation in livelihood activities. Inter-correlations among socio-personal characteristics showed that caste was related to marital status and educational attainment. It is concluded that socio-personal attributes of rural youth are related to their participation in livelihood activities. The study recommends that socio-personal variables of present study be considered by rural development policy makers when undertaking programmes aimed at enhancing rural youth’s livelihoods.
