Inter Lingual Influences of Turkish, Serbian and English Dialect in Spoken Gjakovar's Language

European Journal of Social Sciences Education and Research, 2014

In this paper we have tried to clarify the problems that are faced "gege dialect's'' speakers in Gjakova who have presented more or less difficulties in acquiring the standard. Standard language is part of the people language, but increased to the norm according the scientific criteria. From this observation it comes obliviously understandable that standard variation and dialectal variant are inseparable and, as such, they represent a macro linguistic unity. As part of this macro linguistic unity and by sociolinguistic terms view, members of linguistic community speakers, through changes in phonemic and sub phonemic in toggle sounds, at the same time reflect on the regional and social affiliation background of the speaker. Gjakova is the city where fossils have remained as slang interlingual influences of Turkish language, Serbian language and after the war in Kosovo is very widespread of English slang. The methods we have used in the treatment of our case have been...

2016

The aim of the paper is to present research on language and identity of the youth in Slavonski Brod, the town on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, which, due to its geographical location, has been under a significant influence of the neighbouring Bosnian dialects. This is a town characterized by great immigration processes during 1990s, in the times of Croatian War for Independence and the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Throughout history, Bosnian Sava basin was inhabited mostly by Croats. After the occupation of this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Serbs during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s, Croats were forced to leave the area and they inhabited Slavonski Brod in great numbers. Today, twenty or so years after the occupation of Bosnian Sava basin, a great number of young people can be heard using elements of Bosnian lexicon as well as syntactic structures typical for the parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina where a considerable flow of refugees came from. Con...

Broad vs. Localistic Dialectology, Standard vs. Dialect: The Case of the Balkans and the Drawing of Linguistic Boundaries

2008

1. Preliminaries Dialectology as a scientific pursuit is interested in charting and accounting for the range and spread of similarities and differences—that is to say, variation—within languages, and where appropriate, across languages too. As such, dialectology and the study of dialects more generally intersect in several ways with Balkan linguistics, the study of the interactions among various Aromanian (a close relative of Daco-Romanian spoken mostly in Greece and Macedonia), Daco-Romanian (the language of Romania), Romani (the language of the Gypsies (Rom)), and Turkish—that show structural parallels linking them in a particular type of contact zone known as a " Sprachbund ". First, there can be dialect divisions within a language that indicate that one dialect or dialect area of a language has been influenced by neighboring Balkan languages while other dialects have not, or have not to the same extent. This is the case, for instance, with the Torlak dialects of Serbia...

The Boundaries of Štokavian Dialect as the Borders of United National State of Ethno-Linguistic Serbs

Sustainable Multilingualism, 2013

this research paper sets out to present linguistic aspect of ideological framework in making both serbian national identity and national state building program created in the first half of 19 th century by two different serbian writers (Vuk stefanović-karadžić and ilija garašanin). in the following decades this "linguistic" framework of national identity became one of the cornerstones of serbian national ideology and foreign policy. the question of national identity and creation of national state occupied the first place of agenda in the mind of the leading serbian intellectuals and politicians in the first half of 19 th century. imbued by ideas of german Romanticism and French Revolution, serbian patriotic public actors set up a goal to create an ideologicalpolitical framework for serbian national liberation under foreign occupation-Roman Catholic Habsburg Monarchy and islamic Ottoman Empire. the present work investigates the linguistic model of national identification of the south slavs designed by Vuk stefanović karadžić in 1836 and the programme for the restructuring of the political map of the balkan Peninsula drafted by ilija garašanin in 1844. this work is an attempt to reconstruct the understanding of karadžić and garašanin of those components of group counsciousness which could affect the sense of belonging to the same community. there are three goals of this research paper: to investigate how language influenced serbian national ideologies in the first half of the 19th century; to discuss how Vuk stefanović karadžić, the most influential serbian 19th century philologist, and ilija garašanin, the most important serbian 19th century politician, answer the fundamental question of serbian nationalism from the perspective of the 19th century Romanticism: who are the serbs and what are the borders of the united serbian national state?; and to define the formation of structure of serbian linguistic nationalism in the first half of the 19th century. two research methods were applied were: the method of the text analysis of the prime historical sources and the method of comparison of different interpretations and undestandings of the works by V. s. karadžić and i. garašanin. the main research results are that V. s. karadžić's understanding of the language in the conception of serbian linguistic nationalism was primarily of ethnic nature and that i. garašanin drafted a project of the united serbian national state by implementing a linguistic model of serb national identification developed by V. s. karadžić.

Whither Variationist Sociolinguistics in Serbia?

BELLS, IN HONOUR OF RANKO BUGARSKI ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 85TH BIRTHDAY, 2018

Little has changed since 1965 and Bugarski's original call to study urban speech in Yugoslavia (and his subsequent reporting of new advances regarding the birth of variationist sociolinguistics). We still do not know how the majority of Serbs speak, nor what the scope of stylistic and social variation is in towns and cities of the Serbian-speaking world. This paper will try to show how sociolinguistics in the narrow sense of the term has been largely absent in Serbia; it will try to provide some reasons for this; and it will outline what little has been done in terms of urban dialectology and variationist sociolinguistics.

LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE IN THE CITY OF OSIJEK

Our linguistic landscape research explores the sociolinguistic situation in the city of Osijek with a particular emphasis on the linguistic and cultural implications for the Croatian speech community. The study aims to answer the following research question: To what extent does the linguistic landscape of Osijek reflect the influence of the American language and culture? Using theoretical paradigms and analytical instruments of linguistic landscape methodology we analyzed linguistic signs collected at survey areas in the city. This analysis considers the influence on the linguistic landscape of Osijek of factors such as geographic distribution, power relations, prestige, symbolic value, identity issues, tourism, language vitality and literacy. Data analysis results have shown that the linguistic landscape in Osijek has been shaped by Americanization in all aspects of social and cultural identity. English prevails as the preferred language of Croatian non-native English speakers to the extent that not only has English pushed out Croatian as the language of popular use but American cultural values are competing with the local culture.
