This has caused to emerge a lot issues in urban form through uncontrolled growth. As urban form is known one of main urban design elements and urban design has played main role in protection and evolution of urban identity through recognizing of local distinctive symbols. Basically, urban design has focused on environmental characterizes and local identity of cities. Beside, Landuse map is last production of Landuse planning and urban design first phase. So, people volitions are appeared physically that is urban design base. Thus, Landuse can play main role in physical identity through cities forming and it is efficient instrument for urban management. This paper identifies elements of urban physical identity and further examines Landuse planning and making of cities physical identity in Iran.
The role of façades in the formation of physical identity in the Iranian cities
International Journal of Human Capital In Urban Management, 2018
The physical identity in the urban areas can be considered as a concept which is influenced by the way of arranging the urban body. As a matter of fact, the appropriate coordination and the compatibility of physical components, such as the urban façades, can definitely facilitate the reorganization of the urban environment for being more identifiable; this issue is so obvious in the historical Iranian cities which have proper identities in their physical structures. Nowadays, the dominance of contradictory approaches and the absence of a convenient orientation have unfortunately produced inadequate urban façades and have annihilated the physical identity in Iranian cities. Also, the process of globalization and elimination of the cultural differences have greatly undermined the possibility of creating the traditional and contextual memories. In fact, the Iranian urban developments with the lack of comprehensive, endemic, and contextual plans and actions, increasingly decline the urban identity in any aspect and dimension. These types of flaws have specifically brought severe problems such as poor beauty, weak legibility, lack of unity, inappropriate physical integrity, etc., which eventually result in the non-identifiable and depersonalized urban bodies. Thereupon, this article needs some visual information which can intuitively assist to scrutinize the deterioration factors of the physical identity in the Iranian cities. Hence, by choosing the field study method is tried to reach some empirical investigation in order to collect the required visual information through photography. Moreover, at the end of this article is attempted to offer several solutions and arrangements for promoting the physical identity and also healing the depersonalization in Iranian cities.
Regeneration of Place Identity in Urban Space (Case Study: Baharestan Square in Iran
International Journal of Sciences, 2016
The physical structure of the Iranian cities has been changed in Islamic era. Square and street are two important spatial elements of Islamic cities. Square, has been religious (e.g., Mosques) and economical (e.g., the markets) roles. Also, it has been as a common place around which governmental buildings were constructed, gained momentum. Thus, Squares are memorized place for residents. This research has been studied Baharestan square in Iran as historical urban space. The Impact of Land Form on Urban Identity; El Shamiya Project, Makkah, Saudi Arabia
JES. Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2016
The aim of this paper is to clarify the relationship between urban identity and landform. It discusses the aspects of urban identity from the system approach then the impact of landform on these aspects i.e. spatial experience and cultural representation is determined. This research is performed in light of recent urban development that takes place in Makkah`s centre. This area is undergoing development that affects its landform configuration. A comparative analysis is conducted between the old Shamiya district and new Shamiya project to examine the changes of its identity. This comparative analysis is based on space syntax theory which is applied using the Rhinoceros 5® program-grasshopper plugin. The results show that highland strengthens the place identity arising from cultural representation and weakens the degree of city legibility.
Urban Environmental Aesthetic and Identity: The Case of Masouleh, Iran
Art-Sanat, 2022
Urban environmental aesthetics and place identity have begun to take their place on the design and planning agenda, especially in recent years. Urbanization resulting from competition between cities has caused the loss of identity and aesthetics in cities all over the world. The decreasing use of traditional building methods and planning, without consideration of the local context, by developers, authorities, and even administrators of cities has led cities to resemble each other. In light of these developments, the shape, form, texture, and especially identity and aesthetics of settlements become important in planning and urban design. While the concepts of aesthetics and urban identity are difficult to define, there are some parameters to evaluate them. This paper has two main objectives. The first is to determine parameters to evaluate aesthetics and urban identity. The second is to check these parameters over historical and touristic settlements. For this purpose, the concepts of aesthetics and spatial identity will be explained within the scope of the literature. The city of Masouleh in Iran has been chosen as an example of a historical and touristic settlement. The systematic development of the historical settlement, as well as the landscape, identity, and aesthetics of the environment's harmony and texture, were evaluated with a descriptive-analytical approach methodology based on the parameters revealed in the scope of the research. The findings aim to reveal the aesthetics and identity of historical residential areas. Including this information in scientific studies will lead to the design of more aesthetic settlements in the future.
The Effect of Change in Urban Squares on Urban Identity: The Case of Konya
Architecture Research, 2019
Change is an inevitable fact because of the structure of cities. This study aims to investigate the effect of this change-that urban squares undergo with the decisions changed in time and political and cultural identity that the city exhibits-on urban identity. It also proposes realizing the design principles of urban squares to become important urban identity elements. For this, the paper opted for a study including spatial reading and interviews with the citizens using the research field. The data were complemented by documentary analysis, including literature research related to research problem. The visual data were obtained from satellite images and archives of Konya Municipality. The analysis was conducted by realizing spatial readings on the change observed on visual data, and evaluated via interviews. According to the results of case study, it is determined that there can be positive and negative effects of the change on urban identity. The ongoing socio-cultural and socioeconomic activities in urban squares form the social side of the urban identity. The other physical elements that urban squares have are in the scope of artificial environment urban identity components affecting urban identity. As part of the mentioned artificial environment identity components, the variety in the equipment elements with different physical features like focal points, symbols, boundaries, sitting elements, water features and top cover contributes to urban identity in catchy and impressive quality.
Evaluation of Urban Identity and its Components in Landscape Architecture
2017
Today, globalization, industrialization and technological developments have caused radical changes in cities. As the cities of the world become increasingly similar, the change emerging from the functional and aesthetic direction affects the urban dimension of identity. In this context, it is necessary to determine the "existing" and "missing" of the city by determining the ways of reaching the identity of the city. Within this whole environmental context, density, public space including streets and streets, the relation of urban functions, building and urban open space associations, monuments, urban facilities are being discussed as the elements that constitute urban identity. Determination of the identity of the city is important for assessing urban life. The aim of this research which evaluates the original texture of the urban settlement on "urban identity" is to determine the urban identity components in the urban settlement and to reveal these components in the city center scale.
