Creativity as an approach and teaching method of traditional Greek dance in secondary schools

Studies in Physical Culture and Tourism 2009 Vol 16 No 2, 2009

Education should always incorporate children's creative and free expression at a general level and this should also apply at the level of movement. Creativity can be cultivated, developed and expressed within an environment of acceptance, freedom and communication as long as appropriate qualitative and quantitative stimuli are provided. This is the reason why pedagogues should be seriously concerned with the types of tasks introduced at schools, student's cognitive preparation and teaching procedures. Different studies show that although children's creative ability is steadily developing since early infancy, it falls into decline during their school initiation. During their school life students are forced to inhibit their creative and innovative expression and yield to the process of "mechanical memorizing" oriented towards imitation and reproduction. The aim of this paper is to investigate creativity as an approach and teaching method of traditional Greek dance in secondary schools. More specifically, a comparison was made between two teaching methods: "teacher-centric" versus "guided discovery" or "guided reinvention style" in combination with the "divergent production style" in a Greek middle school. A six-month pilot study was carried out in the A and B grades of two middle schools of the Prefecture Department of Thessaloniki. The study sample consisted of 200 middle school students, 82 boys (Ν=82) and 118 girls (N=118). The data was collected with the use of a questionnaire. The evaluation results showed that when the creative teaching methods were implemented (i.e. the "guided discovery" or "guided reinvention style" in combination with the "divergent production style"), triggering of students' experiential learning process rendered the lesson more effective and successful,l and raised the students' level of active participation in traditional Greek dance lessons in school. The success of this creative teaching curriculum makes a great contribution to the preservation and continuation of our cultural heritage.

Creative thinking in young students

2020

The aim of this study was to compare young girls' performance in terms of creative thinking who were involved in ballet and those involved in Taekwondo. On the one hand, teaching ballet to young children is inextricably linked with the use of music and free kinetic expression. On the other hand, Taekwondo is a sport, which includes a rich motor repertoire. A total of 36 girls aged from 7 to 9 years completed the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) (Form A);18 girls were involved in ballet and 18 were involved in Taekwondo. The TTCT is a highly reliable creativity test and the most widely used test to assess creative thinking and creativity. All participants completed the Verbal TTCT, Thinking Creatively with Words and the Figural TTCT, Thinking Creatively with Pictures. The TTCT is appropriate for all levels, from kindergarten to adulthood and is scored based on four scales: 'Fluency', 'Flexibility', 'Originality' and 'Elaboration'. These scales are considered to be the most important ones for evaluating creative thinking and creativity. To compare the performance between the two groups, Mann-Whitney non-parametric control was used for independent specimens. The results showed statistically significant differences that favored girls who were involved in ballet only in the Figural Test. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of their performance in the Verbal Test. The discussion focuses on the contribution of music to teaching and free dancing as well as the important role they seem to play in developing young students' imagination and creativity.

This research is a correlational study using a quantitative approach. Data collection techniques through creative tests and dance skills test. Analytical techniques using prerequisite analysis tests include normality testing, linearity test, and hypothesis testing using the product-moment correlation analysis with the level of significance of the analysis results by 5%. Based on the results, the study showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between creativity and the ability to dance fourth-grade students of elementary school. This is evidenced by the significance of the 0.02 (P ≤ 0.05), meaning there is a positive rela...

DEVELOPMENT OF CREATIVE THINKING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS AT PHYSICAL CULTURAL LESSONS IN UKRAINE: REALITIES AND PERSPECTIVES

International Journal of Applied Exercise Physiology (IJAEP), 2020

The article deals methods of development of creative thinking of pupils of the secondary school at classes of physical training have been offered. Its specific character lies in provision of stadiality characterized by the following features: each subsequent stage of development of creative thinking is a qualitatively new way of interaction with objects and subjects of pedagogical influence; the stages form both an invariant sequence and certain variational structures that are admitted; each stage is a hierarchical formation, since it integrates the methods of interaction of subjects, characteristic of the previous stages, and includes them in a more differentiated structure of the individual; passing from one stage of development to another, pupils are confronted with manifestations of problems that prompt them to seek a more perfect way of solving them. The experimental method involves three stages: basic, productive and creative. The purpose of the basic stage is the formation of the basis for development of creative thinking of adolescents at the classes of physical culture. Pedagogical activity within its limits is directed at the development of cognitive abilities that determine creative thinking (attention, memory, imagination) and formation of the base of movements and motor activities of pupils of the main school to create opportunities for realization of creative ideas by means of motor activity. The purpose of the productive stage is to improve the perfection of its main characteristics: independence, flexibility and divergent thinking. The goal of the creative phase is to improve the pupils' ability to produce new ideas through non-standard ways of solving motor tasks and combining motor skills for creation of new product activities.
