The purpose of our study was to collect data on how many women had symptoms of this syndrome including hirsutism, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea and oligomenorrhoea.Furthermore what was the ratio of women who were aware of this disorder was evaluated. Data was collected from one hundred and seventy seven women who were either seeking or imparting education in a university. A small portion ofour subjects were educated house wives. Subjects were inquired through survey forms of above mentioned symptoms. The collected data was then interpreted to find the prevalence of above mentioned symptoms and awareness about PCOS. 36.7%out of 177subjects had hirsutism. (Facial hair: 19.5%, Breast hair: 6.5%, other forms of hirsutism: 6.5%). Regarding menstruation 14% had some sort of irregularity. 9% women had oligomenorrhoea, 3% women hadamenorrhea. On the whole 10% were familiar with PCOS. To conclude this study does not have sufficient evidence to establish the prevalence of PCOs through ultrasonography; thus only prevalence of amenorrhoea, oligomenorrhoea and hirsutism has been stated which can serve as a guideline towards finding the true prevalence PCOS in our society.

A cross sectional study on prevalence of PCOS and risk factors associated with it among medical students

IP innovative publication pvt. ltd, 2019

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common female endocrine disorder, complex for managing clinicians and a scientific challenge for researchers. It is a multifaceted disease arising from hereditary, non-hereditary intra and extra uterine environmental influences. The exact pathophysiology of PCOS is complex and remains unclear. The objective of this study is to find the prevalence of PCOS and also the risk factors associated with it among women aged 17-24 years of age so as to identify young women at a risk of developing PCOS. This cross -sectional study was conducted in a medical college in Nerul, Navi Mumbai situated in Maharashtra among 456 medical, dental, physiotherapy students in the age group of 17-24 years. A prevalence rate of 21.05 % was identified. Among those with PCOS, the mean age was 21.18 years. 22.22% of the subjects were at high risk and 77.77% were at low risk for PCOS. Most of the ones diagnosed with PCOS had a waist to hip ratio greater than 0.8 (P<0.05) and were either obese or overweight (BMI>25 kg/m2) (P<0.01), suffered from menstrual irregularities (P<0.05), hirsutism (P<0.05) and emotional problems like feeling moody and easy fatigability (P<0.05). The study reveals that PCOS is a common problem among young women that demands lifestyle modification, better awareness and early diagnosis among the masses to prevent further complications.

The prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome in a community sample of Iranian population: Iranian PCOS prevalence study

Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 2011

Background: Despite the heavy burden and impact of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in reproduction and public health, estimates regarding its prevalence at community levels are limited. We aimed to ascertain prevalence of PCOS in a community based sample using the National Institute of Health (NIH), the Rotterdam consensus (Rott.) and the Androgen Excess Society (AES) criteria. Methods: Using the stratified, multistage probability cluster sampling method, 1126 women were randomly selected from among reproductive aged women of different geographic regions of Iran. PCOS were diagnosed using universal assessment of ultrasonographic parameters, hormonal profiles and clinical histories. Results: The mean +/-SD of age of study population was 34.4 +/-7.6 years. Estimated prevalence of idiopathic hirsutism was 10.9% (95% CI: 8.9-12.9%); 8.3% of women had only oligo/anovulation and 8.0% had only polycystic ovaries. The prevalence of PCOS was 7.1% (95% CI: 5.4-8.8%) using the NIH definition, 11.7% (95% CI: 9.5-13.7%) by AES criteria and 14.6% (95% CI: 12.3-16.9%) using the Rott definition. Conclusions: At community level, widespread screening of Rotterdam criteria will increase the estimated prevalence of PCOS over twofold. Establishing an explicit and contemporaneous method for definition and screening of each PCOS criteria has important investigational implications and increase the comparability of published research.

PCOS: Backgrounds, evidence and problems in diagnosing the syndrome

International Congress Series, 2005

PCOS constitutes a heterogeneous clinical picture harbouring different subsets of patients. Recently an attempt was made to define the diagnosis of PCOS based on existing clinical evidence. Oligo-or anovulation, clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovaries constitute the key clinical features on which the diagnosis should be based. No single diagnostic criterion is sufficient for clinical diagnosis. Based on this new consensus the spectrum of women with PCOS has been considerably broadened. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence for this new classification and to address problems in diagnosing PCOS using these new criteria.

The cut off of Ferriman Gallwey score for PCOS in Asia and the degree of hyperandrogenism indicator

KnE Medicine, 2017

Objective: To determine the distribution of the Ferriman–Gallwey score in Asia and to study any association between hirsutism and endocrine markers, and also to find the cut off of F-G score. Background: Hirsutism is the most widely used clinical diagnostic criterion for hyperandrogenism, it is present in approximately 70% of PCOS women. Using the Ferriman- Gallwey (F-G) scoring systems for evaluation of hirsutism, the degrees of hyperandrogenism from different regions are distinct and have different cut off.Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital Jakarta in 2015. Reproductive age women who commits with PCOS criteria were included in the study. Clinical data was taken by interview, physical examination and US examination.
