Digital Photographs As Authentic Materials In Teaching Writing

Digital photograph is one of the authentic materials which can be used in the classroom. It is the genuine material designed to help the students in writing process. It is not in the form of printed photograph but in the electronic form. In this study, digital photographs were used to help the students in writing paragraph. It aimed at investigating the use of digital photographs in paragraph writing on the students' writing quality. The research was conducted by using quasi-experimental design. The students were given the treatment by using digital photographs and the other group was not given the treatment by using digital photographs. The subjects of the research were the second semester students of the English Department, IKIP PGRI Madiun. The students in the experimental group were assigned to write a paragraph by using digital photographs, while those in the control group were assigned to write a paragraph without digital photograph. The data were analyzed by utilizing t-test. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the students who wrote paragraph supplied with the digital photographs and those who wrote paragraph without using digital photographs. It could be shown that digital photographs had a significant effect on writing quality.

This research investigated “Using Picture as Teaching Media in Writing Descriptive Text”. It enhanced the ability to write descriptive in one of junior high school in Garut. The purpose of the research was to know the effect of using pictures on students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The research population was the eighth grade students. The researcher used a written test to collect data. The research design was quantitative experimental. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The technique used in analyzing the data was t-test formula. It was used to determine whether there was a significance difference between the pre-test and post-test. In English Learning Teaching (ELT), digital photographs are considered a compelling visual medium to help students write English texts. A writing skill is a capacity to convert ideas into complete, comprehensive and understandable sentences that may be used to convey those ideas to the reader effectively. The purpose of this research is to find out whether using digital photographs can improve students’ skills in writing descriptive texts or not. The researchers used a descriptive quantitative pre-experimental method by applying digital pictures to teach writing descriptive text. Writing is one of the basic skills in learning English. For some students learning writing is still difficult, especially how to develop ideas into interesting writing. A teacher must be able to apply learning methods that are fun and actively involve students in the learning process, also use appropriate learning media that it can attract students’ interest to make learning writing easier. Effectiveness of Using Personal Photograph as Media in Teaching Writing of Descriptive Text at SMK Sore Tulungagung

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of students' writing descriptive text taught using Personal Photograph at tenth-grade students of SMK "Sore". In this research, the researcher used pre-experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The instrument of this research was a test. The researcher gave a pre-test to the student, and then treatment about writing using Personal Photograph. After that, the researcher gives the student posttest. The population was all students of grade tenth SMK "Sore" Tulungagung with 800 students. The researcher used purposive sampling was taken X TITL 1 as the sample with total was 27 students. After getting enough data, the researcher calculated the data using the t-test. Based on the computation, the mean score of the pre-test is 5.70 and the mean of the post-test 8.41. The t-value is-9.782 consulted to the t-table at the-2.056 significance level to see whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected. It means that t-value is lower than t-table. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis is accepted. Based on the result analysis, the researcher then concludes that using Personal Photograph effectively improved the students' writing descriptive text at the tenth-grade students of SMK "Sore" Tulungagung.

The Effect of Using Wordless Picture on the Second Year Students Abiliy of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in Writing Narrative Text

The objective of this research was to find out whether there is a significant effect of using wordless picture on the second year students' ability of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts.This research is a pre-experimental research using one group pre-test post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group without control group was selected to be a sample. There were 31 students were selected as the sample by using cluster random sampling. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. T-test formula was used in order to find out the difference between pre-test and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses. After analyzing the data, it was found that t-test score was 6.302 while t-table score in significance level 5% df= 29was 2.05. Writing is an action of expressing feelings and ideas into a written form. It is assumed as the most difficult of the four skills, especially for children. However, it is believed that by using interesting media, such as pictures, in which the children can have a lot of fun while learning may improve the students’ skill in writing. Therefore, this study aims to find out whether the use of pictures can significantly improve the students’ writing ability. An experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design was undertaken by giving the students a pretest and a posttest.
