The broken family also called single parent family is not structurally intact for various reasons; death of a parent, divorce, separation, dissertation and illegitimacy, adoption, artificial insemination, surrogate motherhood, or extramarital pregnancy. According to Callister (2006), in a dual parent family, parents are mainly responsible for the educational and career development of their children. Children tend to behave better when both parents are present. However, with the present modernization, the economic instability and industrial revolutions, both parents engage in jobs that can provide more income to the family thereby living their children for a long period of hours at home or school, thus depriving the family of a more intimate parent-child relationship. These contribute to the reasons why some children’s behavior from dual parent families is morally and socially poor.

The purpose of this article was to investigate the nexus between familial characteristics and adolescents' social behaviours in the SouthWestern Region of Cameroon. This study used a mixed-methods design with a semi-structured questionnaire consisting of nine questions that were self-designed and self-administered to adolescents from Borstal Institute, Buea, and Government High School (G.H.S.), Lycée Classique de Buea. Purposive and convenient sampling methods were used to collect the data. The study population consisted of equal number of adolescents from two institutes (n=42), whose ages ranged from 10 to 19 years, with 14 years as their mean age. The data analysis was done through comparative analysis of the familial characteristics of adolescents and their social behaviours. Data was presented through the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, relying on simple statistics, graphs, tables, and verbal presentation. The findings reveal that adolescents that were sampled from Borstal Institute were lessprivileged in terms of their familial characteristics in four out of the five variables tested in the study, compared to adolescents sampled from G.H.S. It is thus recommended that the government engage in renewed efforts to improve family support services in the country.

PARENTING STYLES AND ADOLESCENTS’ BEHAVIOUR IN CENTRAL EDUCATIONAL ZONE OF CROSS RIVER STATE

Tension and behaviour disorder, disagreement increases as friends demonstrate a greater impact on one another, new influences on the adolescents that may be in opposition to parents’ values. All these conflicts create in parents mixed feelings and makes parenting a complex task, with specific parenting practices which are less important in predicting child well-being.
