The Characteristics of Language Politeness in Students’ WhatsApp Messages to Lecturers

This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of language politeness in students' WhatsApp (WA) messages to their lecturers. The research method used was a descriptive method with data consisting of 460 WA messages from 75 students. From this study, it is revealed that 88.7% of the characteristic of students' WA message structure begin with greetings, an apology for sending WA message, self-introduction, message, and thanks with greetings. 82.6% of WA messages are characterized by conversational language style in which they are a fully structured idea which represented using subject and predicate with several omissions in a certain part. The contents of the WA messages consist of 20% of the final project topics such as clarifying supervising schedule, discussing the content of final project, informing the schedule of final project presentation; 66.6% of WA messages contain lecture topics such as informing rescheduled lectures, asking about assignments, asking about score, permission for being absent; and 13.4% of WA messages contain other topics such as felicitations and condolences. Thus, the WA messages sent by the students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung to their lecturers show the characteristics of language politeness.
Use of Greetings in SMS Messages from Students to Lecturers at a Malaysian University

This article reports on a study of politeness strategies in written discourse using Goffman's (1967) theory of "face". The study examined the use or non-use of social greetings in computer-mediated communication, focusing on Short Message Service (SMS) messages from students to lecturers in a private university in Malaysia. A mixed methods design of qualitative and quantitative research techniques was used to analyze a sample of 50 SMS messages selected from students who had taken or were taking an English language course at either diploma or undergraduate level. Frequency distribution and textual analyses of the data showed that the majority of students used informal greetings to begin their SMS messages to their lecturers. Most students in fact failed to employ appropriate politeness strategies that could lessen face-threatening acts between themselves and their lecturers. It was therefore concluded that the students were generally unaware of the difference in social distance, power, and face in the academic setting under study.

Students' Politeness Strategies to Lecturers in Sending Messages through WhatsApp

One of the issues that students face today is a lack of politeness in their language. Students' politeness is reflected in their attitudes when sending messages to lecturers. The objective of this study was to determine how polite students are when communicating with their lecturers through WhatsApp. This study was conducted at a private university in Sukoharjo. The data was obtained from student texts in the lecturer's WhatsApp app. The data was analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) FTA theory on politeness strategies. According to the findings of the study, some students were found sending messages without greeting the lecturers and instead conveying their intentions directly. FTAs are common, and students frequently threaten the lecturers' faces. The words used in a student's message can have an effect on the teacher's feelings and make the conversation appear informal. The way in which we interact with one another is constantly evolving. In this day and age, WhatsApp has become a communication medium commonly used among individuals, especially College Students. The objective of this research is to identify the perceptions and trends of Abu Dhabi university students when considering WhatsApp as an effective interpersonal communication medium. This study will also investigate whether 'emoji's, voice-notes, text messaging etc." could be a replacement of this key face-to-face element during the interpersonal communication process. Lastly, the study also includes a look into whether or not these college students receive miscommunications during WhatsApp communications, and what the biggest miscommunications are. A survey was conducted on 100 Abu Dhabi University students of both genders, using a questionnaire to evaluate their perceptions and activity on the application in order to effectively answer the Research questions. Ultimately this study found a positive reaction from the students and has generated the needed results. WhatsApp can therefore be considered an effective interpersonal communication medium. There are a range of various perceptions with regards to the replacement of face-to-face communication, but it is ultimately used as an addition to, not replacement of face-to-face communication. There are miscommunications found when using the application; however the results varymainly between genders.

Communication using digital media has highly increased since the pandemic, including within education context. Different types of expectation between the involved parties sometimes causing communication challenge for both. This study aims to find out how educators viewed the courtesy shown by the students during interactions using instant messaging media. Specifically, it aims to find out politeness indicators, communication challenges, and educators’ expectations. The interview questions included the concept of appropriate and polite messages between students as well as the overall attitudes of students within WhatsApp communication. — With the advent of whatsapp, information has been spread worldwide easily. Higher learning institutions such as IIUM have been using whatsapp as a mean of communication between the students and their instructors. The use of whatsapp at IIUM has been inevitable. Despite the positive impact of whatsapp as social media to the users, it has also negative impacts on student learning such as: time consuming for student's study time, exacerbating student's grammar and spelling, distracting student's concentration during lecture etc. this study explored the impact of using of whatsapp among postgraduate students' learning at the Kulliyyah of Education (KOED), at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Interview which consisted of fourteen (14) questions were employed with two informants. The study found that using whatsapp as learning tool is beneficial to both students and instructors though it was suggested that electronic etiquette should be applied when using whatsapp in learning.
Ayo Babalola University. Five conversations were collected from five undergraduate students. The conversations were then forwarded to the researcher's phone. Screen shots of each conversation was taken so as to use it as it is on the WhatsApp pages of the owners that are kind enough to release their phones. Pragmatics is the theoretical framework used for the study. The power of influence of given contexts is revealed on messages, on speaker's meaning and speaker's intention in the selected conversations among undergraduate student. The power of emoji and smileys which are the digital version of body language in reducing ambiguity and adding emotional context to what is said is revealed in the selected conversations among undergraduate students in Joseph Ayo Babalola University. We conclude by suggesting that more smileys and emojis be used by conversationalits, since phones even suggest them as you type your conversations. WhatsApp is also used for formal instructions between teachers and students, so more teachers should imbibe the culture of using it for passing instructions to their students. Lastly, seminars and workshops can be organized by government institutions and private organizations to train instructors especially in the higher institutions of learning, on WhatsApp technology and proper usage.
