Universal Journal of Educational Research
Leadership has a great significance in creating high performance and building team loyalty in sport. The purpose of this study is to compare the leadership levels of students studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and other faculties. In addition, leadership qualities were examined in terms of the variables of gender and place of stay. A total of 200 students studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences (n=100; age 21.75±1.99 years) and other faculties (n=100 age; 20.49±1.52 years) participated in this study voluntarily. "Leadership Orientations Questionnaire" developed by Bolman and Deal [1] and adapted into Turkish by Dereli [2] to assess the leadership qualities of students was used as data collection tool. In the sub-dimensions of structural, transformational and charismatic leadership, the scores of faculty of sport sciences students were found to be significantly higher than the scores of the students in other faculties (p<0.01). The average scores of men were found to be higher than those of women in the sub-dimensions of transformational and charismatic leadership (p<0.05). The study was carried out with a total of 251 participants; 116 (46.2%) women and 125 (53.8%) men. The Leadership Style test scale developed by Frew et al. (1977) and adapted to Turkish by was used to assess this relationship. Data were analyzed using the SPSS, version 20. Frequency distributions were used to determine the demographic characteristics of the students. A chi-square analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the independent variables and leadership styles. The results indicate that there is no statistically significant relationship between students' gender and class levels and their views on leadership styles. The results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between students' majors and their views on leadership styles. Management students show features of moderately democratic leadership and features of very democratic leadership while teaching students do not. Another noteworthy finding is that students mainly display mixed features of leadership. It is suggested that courses on leadership be included in the curriculum of physical education and sports departments. Seminars, panels, congresses, etc. should be held to inform students on leadership and, moreover, they should be encouraged to participate in scientific studies. This study was orally presented at the 9th International Education Research Congress held at Ordu University between 11 and 14 May, 2017.

This study aims aimed to examine the relationship between the leadership levels and authenticity of the students in the Department of Recreation in terms of certain variables. The population of the study consisted of students of department of recreation studying in sports sciences faculties and schools of physical education and sports. The variance and homogeneity of the obtained data were tested, and for the data determined to be homogeneous, Independent t-test was used in binary comparisons while One Way Anowa test was used in multiple comparisons, and Tukey HSD test was used to determine the source of difference. For the statistical analysis and interpretation of the data, p<0,05 significance level was taken into consideration. It was found that the mean values of athletes were statistically higher compared to sedentary people in all Leadership dimensions depending of sportiveness factor (p<0.05) while again the mean values of athletes were statistically higher compared to sedentary people in all dimensions except Impartiality within authenticity dimensions (p<0.05). Depending on the age factor, it was determined that the mean value of the 18-21 age group in the Group sub-dimension of the Leadership dimension was statistically higher compared to the 26 and older age group (p<0.05). In all of the authenticity dimensions, it was determined that the values decreased as the age group increased and this change was statistically significant (p<0.05). A positive correlation was found between the leadership and authenticity values, and it was determined that the authenticity increased at the same rate as the leadership characteristics increased. In the light of these findings, it can be said that women are more authentic and unbiased compared to men, the leadership and authenticity values of the athletes are more positive compared to sedentary people, the mean values of the authenticity dimension decrease statistically as the age group increases, and there is a positive relationship between the leadership and authenticity values of the students. It can be said that this situation observed between women and men may be due to the responsibilities and roles imposed on women and men in society, sportive life has a positive effect on the leadership and authenticity characteristics, and the increase in leadership and authenticity characteristics will affect each other positively.
