Effectiveness of Communication Tools in Road Transportation: Nigerian Perspective
2016
Continuous increase in death toll as a result of road accident is at an alarming rate. Recent World Health Organization (WHO) global annual report estimated that about 1.25 million people die in road crashes and Africa region as the highest contributor. This traffic fatality rate has, however, been associated with poor roads condition, drink-driving, over speeding, violation of traffic rules, and careless attitude of the road users. Over the years, various measures such as rehabilitation of poor roads and traffic regulations …etc., has been put in place to avert this predicament but the reverse is the case as death toll through road accident increases by years. Additional measures also include the use of traffic communication tools. Although various communication tools exist on the road, this ought to guide the road users and in a way avert the dangers upcoming; however, this is not the case. In Nigeria, various studies have been conducted to this regards but little or no attention is given to the road marking as a communication tool, thus, these three question remains for Nigeria road network; (1) Do these tools (especially, road marking) exist on roa ds where accidents are frequent? (2) Are these tools effective? (3) What is the understanding of the road users of these tools? Therefore, this study pertains to the effectiveness of the communication tools in road transportation by considering the Nigeria road features and views of the road users. Results show that the drivers have a good knowledge of these traffic communication tools but on an average of 92%, the road marking sampled are not available on the roads and have in one way or the other contributed to the fatality rate experienced. There is a need for stakeholder's interventions which include regular funding and schedule for routine maintenance with more focus on road marking.
This research examines the influence of demographic variables on the use of road safety information by commercial motorcycle riders in Oyo State, Nigeria. Availability of information on road safety on Nigerian road especially by commercial motorcycle riders has been the subject of discussion by the road transport administrators, medical practitioners and the media as a result of unsatisfactory performance. Descriptive research design of the ex-post facto type was adopted for the study. Simple Random sampling was used to cover a study population of four hundred and fifty (450) commercial motorcycle riders in Oyo State, Nigeria. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 P value. Data collected was analyzed using percentages and Multiple Regression. The result shows the positive correlation between demographic variables (location, age, sex, level of education, marital status, income and occurrence of accidents on information utilization (F (7, 442) =17,411; R =0.465, R2= 0.216 Adj. R 2 = 0.204 P < 0.05. Location (β =-0.187, P < 0.05); Level of education (β = 0.279, P < 0.05); Marital status (β = 0.106, P < 0.05); Occurrence of accidents (β = 0.171, P < 0.05). The study concludes that adult literacy classes be established by Nigerian government so as to bridge the gap in the level of education among the commercial motorcycle riders, this is because 62.8% are in the age bracket of 20-30 years.
The study evaluated the commercial vehicle drivers’ perception of the effectiveness of Federal Road Safety Commission road safety education programme on their driving experience, age and behaviour toward safety signs on the roads and highways. It also investigated the influence of drivers’ educational background, duration of learning road safety, behaviour and knowledge on their attitude to road safety education programme. These were with the view to improving the quality of road safety education and training in the country. The study adopted a mixed research approach combining both descriptive survey and focus group designs. The sample consisted of 2,000 commercial vehicle drivers operating in the seven big inter-city parks in the eight local government areas that made up the Hadejia zone in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A 52-item self-developed instrument was used in the study. The qualitative data was collected via focus group. Data were analyzed using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Protected Fisher’s t-test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression statistical methods at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that commercial vehicle drivers’ educational background, duration of learning road safety, behaviour and knowledge significantly combine to influence their attitude to road safety education programme. Further, there existed a significant difference in drivers’ perception of the effectiveness of FRSC road safety education programme on their driving experience toward road safety signs on the roads and highways. However, a non significant difference existed in drivers’ perception of the effectiveness of FRSC road safety education programme on their behaviour toward road safety signs on the roads and highways due to their age. The study concluded that continuous enlightenment campaign through radios, televisions, motor garages to educate commercial drivers is imperative in the country. Key words: Driver education, training, effectiveness, evaluation and perception
