Veiling and Unveiling: Spectrum of Women's Agency on Indonesian Feminist Magazine, Magdalene
This paper examines the diverse perceptions of urban Indonesian women on hijab based on the writings they published in an Indonesian online feminist magazine, Magdalene. In this study, online feminist magazine plays a significant role in providing a safe space for women to express their personal understandings and experiences on hijab apart from how the local society defines it. Hence, this study aims to delve into the women's articulation of agency, regarding their decisions about hijab. This research found that whether to wear or take off the hijab, all of the women made their decision based on their own principles and considerations. Some of them perceives hijab as limitation or oppression, while the others understand it as a way to establish their identity. These results show that Indonesian women raised in Islam tradition actively negotiate their position within the patriarchal context, evaluate the values given to them, and articulate their own perspective based on each of their personal experiences. All these dynamics also show how Magdalene facilitates contesting opinions in order to capture the complexities of women experience.
