Integrating Value Education in Teacher Education Curriculum in the Context of India

A most important reason for integrating value education in teacher education curriculum is the fact that the current model of education contributes to the lopsided development of students. The present model of education puts exclusive focus on cognitive to the total neglect of the affective domain. This gives rise to alienation between head and heart. Students are nurtured in a spirit of excessive competition. They are trained right from the beginning to relate to aggressive competition. The individual excellence is promoted at the cost of emotional and relational skills. Young students hardly figure out why they are in school, why they are studying different subjects and how their schooling will be helpful to them. Their understanding is confined to parroting about the subjects. They don't know how they should live their lives; commit themselves to the welfare of the country. They hardly bother about the environment and other social and moral issues. They hardly know as to what sort of persons they hope to become when they complete their education. Education of this kind reduces children into automated toys.
Value Oriented Teacher Education in India: A Synoptic View
In the age of globalisation, teacher education has adopted scientific materialism but has ignored the holistic human values due to western scientific progress. In this process, development of conscience is being overlooked where competence without developing character is creating people with arrogance, insensitivity and intolerance. Traditional teacher education emphasise on acquisition neglecting internalisation. Value oriented teacher education has been emphasized in various policy documents in India and present two year B.Ed. teacher education curriculum accommodates value along with ethics and harmony and, address them as desired in NCF 2005. Education for value and peace in present course aims at broadening notions of student-teachers about peace and peace education, their relevance and connection to inner harmony as well as harmony in social relationships across individuals and groups, based on Constitutional values. Banaras Hindu University has also suitably incorporated value education in B.Ed. curriculum. Appropriate foundation, teaching learning cycle, pedagogy, and evaluations are other factors necessary for strengthening of value education. Value oriented education is getting adequate attention in India as evident in current teacher education curriculum but it needs further strengthening by incorporating desired methods and regular monitoring. Present paper examines value oriented teacher education as emerging need, analyzes its Indian context especially curriculum framework and pedagogy, describes foundation, teaching learning cycle, pedagogy, and evaluations aspects to strengthen the value-oriented teacher education recommending its implementation in true spirit with sincere concerted efforts.

Teacher education is a continuous process and its pre-service and in-service components are complimentary to each other. Education is instrumental in the preparation of teachers who can in their practice ensure transformative learning, where teacher and learner, learner and learner are co-constructors of knowledge. The aim of the present paper is to improve the teacher education quality in India by focusing on the problems & related concerns. The present structure of teacher education is supported by a network of national, provincial and district level resource institutions working together to enhance the quality and effectiveness of teacher preparation programs at the pre-service level and also through in-service programs for serving teachers throughout the country. Importantly, the teacher education and training institutions must take up the charge of educating policy makers and the general public about what it actually takes to teach effectively both in terms of knowledge and skills that are needed and in terms of the school contexts that must be created to allow teachers to develop and use what they know on behalf of their students. Now teacher has to perform various roles like encouraging, supporting and facilitating in teaching-learning situations which enables learners to discover their talents, to realize their physical and intellectual potentialities to the fullest, to develop character and desirable social and human values to function as responsible citizens. Teacher and his education are very significant aspects of any nation. The education gives a new shape to the individual and the nation as well. It is a well known saying that teacher is the nation builder. The quality of teacher education programme needs to be up graded. Teacher education has not come up to the requisite standards. Teachers are not able to think critically and solve the issue related to teaching methods, content, organisation etc. teacher education programme needs a comprehensive reform and restructuring curriculum of teacher-education programme needs to be revised according to changing needs of society. Reviewing and rethinking the teachers' role in teacher education in India has become a critical issue in recent times, along with the social and cultural shifts, changing paradigms and the emergence of new epistemological, political and technological explorations and contexts. The changing role of teachers in India since the Vedic period to the present era has caused a tremendous shift in compliance with the societal needs, curriculum demands and global ranking of a country, thereby, it is continuously evolving. This demands a particular model or blueprint to be implemented by the teachers in association with the respective curriculum, their role to execute the same as per the changing landscape, demands the teachers' role as a reflective multitasker, context-based and critical problem solver in the execution of teaching. This article explores the various models of teacher education as perspectives change from time to time in relation to individual needs in particular and society at large, how important changes in teacher education policy occur with serious consequences in terms of the concept and context of teacher education and the research dimension integrated into teacher education, as well as new concepts and approaches linking theory and practice.

Ancient Indian Education was value based. Dealing with values and moral issues is recognised as an integral part of teachers' roles. Now, education has an enormous role to play in the social, intellectual and political transformation of the world. Parents, communities and government have always expected schools to develop students who would contribute to the society in which they live. Effective teaching practices in imparting value education have ranges from storytelling, exhibitions, skits, one act play and group discussions to various other formats. In the information technology age, it can be hard to get a grip on the evolving roles of teachers. It can seem as if the role of teachers has grown immensely; they are now expected to be tech-savvy, computer literate and at the cutting edge of education. To inculcate values the necessary curriculum and skills required for a teacher educator. The role of the educators become more challenging & rewarding, in terms of the inculcating the values among the learners. The proper assimilation of these values by a teacher educator can be done through their positive role and prescribed means. An educational institution performs a significant function of providing learning experiences to lead their students from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The key personnel in the institutions who play an important role to bring about this transformation are teachers. As stated by NCTE (1998) in Quality Assessment of Teacher Education in India-The teacher is the most important element in any educational program. It is the teacher who is mainly responsible for implementation of the educational process at any stage. This shows that it is imperative to invest in the preparation of teachers, so that the future of a nation is secure. The importance of competent teachers to the nation's school system can in no way be overemphasized. The National Curriculum Framework 2005 places demands and expectations on the teacher, which need to be addressed by both initial and continuing teacher education.

The paper is a comparative analysis of teachers in teacher colleges and those practicing in schools of their perception of teaching, curriculum, classroom practice and evaluation in integral schools. These schools practice the philosophy of The MOther and Sri Aurobindo of education guided by the child . The study revealed that while the teacher in the teacher college wanted to experience classroom practice and the regular teachers wanted more academic inputs to manage their experience in the classroom .
