Modern Information and Communication Technologies are definitely a key factor to develop the green and sustainable applications that the so-called " smart city " needs. Effective management of resources, gathering and interpreting data as well as ecological considerations are prerequisites to turn such a vision into reality. The European FP7 project DIMMER address these issues by providing a flexible Internet of Thing platform for application development and data integration, exploiting information about buildings, energy distribution grids and user behaviors. Among those applications, the possibility to real-time access and aggregate information about building environmental characteristics and energy consumption enables the optimization of energy management and control, as well as the user's awareness about, which is the scope of the DIMMER project. The paper will describe the ontology-driven approach, as well as the actual design, exploited to model the physical world within the context of this project, adding a special emphasis on the state of art research in the field of energy profiling.

For promoting the diffusion of GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pumps) a tool for sizing these systems will be carried out in the H2020 research project named " Cheap GSHPs ". The paper presents the set up of a database with energy profile of a certain amount of buildings representative of the typology (single family houses, block of flats, office buildings) with different insulation levels and in different climatic conditions. Based on the weather analysis among European climatic files, twenty locations have been considered. For each location the overall energy and the mean hourly monthly energy profiles for heating and cooling (sensible and latent) have been calculated. Based on the results, the correlations with Degree Days (DD) for heating

The analysis of structural and energy features of proteins can be a key to understand how proteins work and interact to each other in cellular reactions. Potential energy is a function of atomic positions in a protein structure. The distributions of energy over each atom in protein structures can be very supportive for the studies of the complex processes proteins are involved in. Energy profiles contain distributions of different potential energies in protein molecular structures. Therefore, they constitute a full descriptor of energy properties for protein structures. The Energy Distribution Data Bank (EDB, http://edb.aei.polsl.pl) stores energy profiles for protein molecular structures retrieved from the well-known Protein Data Bank. In the paper, we describe the purpose of the EDB, a possible use of the information stored in it, query possibilities, and plans for future development.

Protein structure has a big impact on the protein's activity in the living cells. Conformational modifications as an effect of biochemical reactions or environmental influences cause changes in the conformational energy distributions. Therefore, observations of the energy characteristics allow to detect structural changes of selected proteins. Moreover, having entire sets of energy characteristics it is possible to compare given protein structure to other structures or search for similar structures in the set. In the paper, we present the method of similarity searching based on energy profiles. This method can be employed to detect protein structure modifications. In the method, we use distance matrices to find the alignment between two proteins on the energy level. Energy profiles are received in the computational process based on the molecular mechanics theory. Afterwards, these profiles can be stored in the special purpose database and used by the search engine. In the solution, additional protein features are extracted and stored. They may be used in the searching process in the preselection phase. At the end of the paper, we give some examples of the system usage regarding our recent research on protein kinases and their activity.

Describing protein structures in terms of their energy features can be a key to understand how proteins work and interact to each other in cellular reactions. This can be also a base to compare proteins and search protein similarities. In the paper, we present protein comparison by the alignment of protein energy signatures. In the alignment, components of energy signatures are represented as fuzzy numbers. This modification improves the decision making while establishing the alignment path and guarantees the approximate character of the method, at the same time. The effectiveness of the developed alignment algorithm is tested by incorporating it in the new FS-EAST method (Fuzzy Signatures – Energy Alignment Search Tool), which allows to seek structurally similar regions of proteins.
