Life throws different kinds of 'difficult' situations as us. No hygge in there for those moments. Quite often some people go into deep obsessive over-thinking, over a particularly uncomfortable situation, to depths that sometimes may not even exist. They traumatise themselves by agonizing so horrendously, it sometimes becomes difficult to grow out of that kind of 'invited' depression. These feelings of hopelessness or 'imaginary' helplessness fades away with passage of time for those with different mindsets. When you have or are determined to have a 'growth mindset', those distressing experiences will come to pass, simply as reminders and self-awareness, to have personal boundaries with/in your future situation/s.

People work for their daily living with different mindsets. Sometimes our daily routines may not go as planned, which probably upsets us and then takes a toll on our entire day. So where is the 'hygge of the moment' when things go sideways from there on, and/or for that time and more? There can never be that hygge time, until you have settled your issues, at least for that time. To add to your discomfort of your day, you are faced with working with people who probably facing issues with the start to their day. Now, you not only have to deal with your issues, but also with those of your co-workers. Oh great!! So much for a 'hygge' start to your day!!

As a prioress of the monastery sister Urszula Ledóchowska lead a fruitful and educational work of Polish and Roman Catholic spirit for Polish community institutions in Petersburg, Denmark and Finland since 1907. Starting from 1915, she delivered lectures on Poland's topics to the public in Scandinavia. Her aim was to explain Poland's merits for the sake of European history and culture and she presented the drama of the country's partitions and its common people situation during the I World War. It was Polish territories where the most bloody war atrocities took place. This was a less known fact in Western and Northern Europe hence the nun was writing the paper articles and public appeals resulting in gaining many influential persons of the epoch for the cause of charity actions. After the war had finished, as a prioress of the nuns working with children, she put stress on pervading education and taking care of Polish children of poor families‟ background.(T. Skrzyński, Patriotic ideas in life and work of saint Urszula Ledóchowska "Język. Religia. Tożsamość" 2011, nr 5, s. 195-208).

The contemporary civilization developed by the science and technology has generated environmental problems such as global warning, which has led to climate change producing droughts or floods due to heavy rain. The earth has changed to the Anthropocene epoch, which refers to human influence on the planet’s geology and ecosystem. The Anthropocene epoch was widely popularized in 2000 by atmospheric chemist Paul J. Crutzen (Crutzen and Stoermer, 2000), who regards the influence of human behavior on the earth’s atmosphere in recent centuries so significant that it constitutes a new geological epoch. These results mentioned that global sustainability is tied to both human activity and the natural environment. We should consider the coexistence between human life and earth’s environment. In these condition, the following two points should be considered. 1) Humans seek to maintain their livelihoods (i.e. civilization) and seek satisfaction in their lives. 2) Humans need to conserve and mai...

Frustration-Oh!!! This can really go on relentlessly for some of us every single day. The name of the game is how to handle your ongoing frustrations in a calm way without exhibiting your infuriation in public or with people around you. Every once in a while, there will be someone to keep you on your toes, or some kind of situation that will present itself in the most exasperating way-perhaps intentionally or unintentionally. Surrounding circumstances maybe the cause of your situation or it could be anyone you know or don't know that could be the trigger of your disappointment. Either way, those frustrating thoughts get to you. Why?? Because you weren't psychologically prepared for it.

Those who haven't yet comprehended the concept of HYGGE, will take time to fundamentally comprehend the Danish lifestyle concept, that took the world by storm from 2016 onwards, barely remembering or realising that hygge always existed. It's just that hygge was used as a publicizing technique to capitalise on advertising of various goods and services. Little does one realise that hygge was, still is, and will always be an integral and imbibed 'way of life' and a dominant part of the Danish cultural conditions.

This article was inspired by the cooperation between two university teams implementing a Polish-Norwegian project Green Schoolbag for the Earth Climate. The project was aimed at preparing early school pedagogy teachers and students for the implementation of education for sustainable development (SD). A study trip to Norway and sharing experience gave rise to studying Norwegian curricula and educational literature. The study findings revealed that local educational philosophies and SD in the four Scandinavian countries differ in social, cultural and educational terms. The article presents the historical background to introducing SD into social and cultural habits in each of the countries and, consequently, lifestyles typical of the inhabitants of these countries. Four types of lifestyles are compared: Finish sisu, Norwegian friluftsliv, Danish hygge and Swedish lagom. The analysis proved that Scandinavian countries have similar climate and values as regards their attitudes to nature. However, differences in local philosophies are visible and their inhabitants present specific lifestyles, different behaviours and social and cultural principles behind their attitudes to the SD concept. The conclusion of the article puts an open question about Polish people's local philosophy, lifestyle and SD education.

Breaking Barriers with Hygge A deep hygge thought-Can you actually live a 'hygge' life?? Don't we all at some point or the other feel humiliated or argue or have ongoing concerns?? So on and so forth. Is 'living hygge' any 'solution' to definitive complications?? So many questions and thoughts to think about. So much drama to deal with, daily. So much of austerity going around every single day sometimes. So what's 'hygge' in consciously being aware of unpleasant 'live wire' situations around you??

There you go!!! You're silent. You're pondering intensely!!! Are you concerned?? Why??

The Danish word hygge, whose definition is the subject of scientific papers and dissemination works, is nowadays one of the terms that most frequently characterize Danish culture and world view. In many books and articles (more and more in the last few years), this word is used to label a value system involving any aspect of daily life, and is presented as the secret of Danish happiness, a state of wellness which international surveys have confirmed at least since 1970s. In The Danish Way of Parenting (2014), Jessica Alexander and Iben Sandahl investigate the different aspects of this way of living when upbringing children; the key words the authors use and their fields of application find several meaningful correspondences in Karin Michaëlis’ Bibi’s daily life, with the substantial difference that in Michaëlis’ series (first book in 1927, 1929), the focus lies on the girl herself, who often reports her experiences. My contribution aims to assess to what extent Bibi exemplifies a way of life and a value system which later has been formalized in the nowadays worldwide discussed Danish hygge lifestyle (or, better, in its way of parenting), in this way offering a new perspective to consider Michaëlis’ plea for children’s rights and spaces in her literary works.

Higher education institutions have been profoundly reshaped by processes associated with neoliberalism. In this chapter, Larsen outlines the ways in which Denmark has ushered in market-driven reforms to the Danish higher education system to enhance their institutional competitiveness over the past 30 years. Research on the impacts of neoliberal higher education reforms on faculty is reviewed and the author discusses her experiences (at a Canadian university) with market-driven, accountability reforms. The chapter shifts direction and provides the reader with an overview of the concept of hygge, an idealized Danish term that has connotations of coziness, safety, friendliness, and intimacy. Larsen recounts her experiences as a Canadian academic on sabbatical at a Danish university in 2017, illustrating the ways in which she experienced hygge in the Danish university setting. In the final section of the chapter, Larsen argues that hygge can be viewed as a retreat from the individualism, competition, market stratification and other challenges associated with neoliberalism. Hygge marks out the boundaries between the cold and heartless marketplace and the warm and cozy home, and despite critiques that is instantiates exclusions, hygge offers hope to resist the alienation associated with neoliberalism and provide an alternative ethos for close and safe social relations within academia.

On a warm 1st of July 2018, two scholars who have both spent considerable time and energy delving into the concept of hygge came together, to have a conversation about this supposedly unique Danish concept that has recently caught the global public’s imagination.
They met in a wooden cottage north of Copenhagen. Lounging in one chair was Jeppe Linnet, a Danish anthropologist with a PhD in the area of Consumer Culture Theory, specifically focusing on hygge. In the other chair was Jonathan Bean, an American who also focused his doctoral work on hygge and whose recent work connects taste, design, and consumption

This thesis attempts to introduce tranquility as a spatial concept and to develop first hypotheses into its application within Urban Studies by the application of an experiential theoretical and methodological framework. In order to comply with this objective, three existing fields of research (Restorative Environments, Calm Technology, Stillness) are presented as orientating spatial notions that are akin to tranquility. Subsequently, the research field around atmospheres is introduced as a theoretical and a methodological framework working at the grounds of the executed investigations. These took place in two places within Malmö: a silent after-work concept called Tyst Off the Work and a resting room, referred to as Vilrum, in one of the buildings of Malmö University. Autoethnographical accounts of the two cases are brought forward in the form of micrologies and subsequently interpreted. The thesis concludes with three hypotheses about the rationale around tranquility in the investigated cases: the understanding of tranquility as a rest between productive action, the affective impact of the public-private setting as exclusive, and a tendency towards standardized notions of tranquility.

The article comnents on the amazing enthusiasm generated by the now popularised concept of "hygge" from Denmark. The so-called Danish secrets to happiness have been brought into vogue in Poland as well as other countries worldwide. The author tries to show that the reach of this concept is much broader than - the area of trendy lifestyles or competition from Nordic neighbourhood, for instance Swedish idea "lagom". Namely, patriotism and its cultural practises in the everyday life lie at the root of all Danish inclination for I comfort and cosiness.

When troops are deployed in distant theaters of war as part of international military coalitions, winning the hearts and minds of the home population is a critical and difficult task. In this article we explore, how Denmark has recently come to embrace military interventions and normalize war. We argue that this has happened through a dual process, involving on the one hand a militarization of culture and history by which military values are imposed on people, and on the other a cultural domestication of the military by which cultural values are imposed on the military. The two co-existing processes expound apparently contradictory values of courage and coziness, but we argue that these constitute a productive ambiguity that facilitates an understanding of Denmark’s new role as a warring nation as consistent with or even reinforcing and promoting prevailing understandings of Danish-ness. In and around military operations in Afghanistan, they also constitute a cultural resource that is mobilized. This happens when Danish soldiers create physical quarters at their base, in which they restitute while experiencing elements of Danishness in the style of socialization that they practice, and in the atmosphere of the place. Cultural understandings of Danish character and history also provide a resource for the soldiers´ next of kin, and the Danish Defence authorities, when they account for the “Danishness” of the soldiers as being both unscathed by the experience of war, and as providing support for their professional approach to soldiering.

Hygge is a keyword in Danish culture and a product of the distinctive
Danish social ethos which developed in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The aim of this chapter is to provide a semantic and ethnopragmatic analysis of the concept hidden in this word, and the two main questions are: What does hygge mean, and which cultural values are co-construed with the word? (Ch3 in "Cultural Semantics and Social Cognition")

The atmosphere of coziness, or “hygge” as it is referred to in Denmark, gives certain places such as cafés a particular appeal, that of providing an experience of pleasant relaxation in the here and now. This article argues that coziness can be seen as a pleasant experience of interiority, and that there are new and valuable understandings of such urban atmospheres to be gained by considering the role of co-presence with other people: How subjects relate both to fellow consumers on site, and the surrounding urban crowd. The article calls attention to the way that social and material dynamics interrelate in constituting this form of urban ambience, as the weaving of intersubjective space mirrors the interiority and porosity of material form. What arises is an experience of being pleasantly, anonymously co-present with other people´s social circles and urban movements.

This article explores the use of light in Denmark as part of shaping atmospheres. It discusses how the words informants use to express a particular atmosphere may have multiple connotations and, in essence, be defined more by their vagueness than by their clarity. The article argues that taking informants’ lack of clarity at face value rather than focusing on clear ontological statements offers new ways for the ethnographer to gain insights into the material aspects of social life through the concept of atmospheres. Atmospheres denote a sensuous ‘something’ that takes place in-between things and people. They may be ontologically difficult to grasp or contain yet they play an important role in ordering spaces and social life. With a focus on the ‘ecstasy’ of things – in this case a light source – as a sensuous encounter of presence, the article argues that both the contemporary focus on the ontology of things within anthropology as well as a Post-ANT perspective on performativity, though analytically useful, also methodologically overlook how the vagueness of atmospheres foregrounds the contemporaneity and entanglement of matters, minds and cultural preferences of sensing places.
