The first synthesis of species diversity of the wasps of the family
Vespidae (Hymenoptera; Vespoidea) for Guatemala is presented.
In total 90 species are cited formally from the subfamilies
Masarinae, Eumeniniae, Polistinae and Vespinae, based
on literature citings, examinations of collections and our own
collecting. The Eumeninae is represented by 13 genera and
42 confirmed species. Polistinae is represented by 10 genera
and 45 confirmed species. Masarinae is represented by one
species, Paramasaris fuscipennis (Cameron 1901), widely distributed
in the tropics. Vespinae is represented by Vespula squamosa
(Drury 1773) and the recently described Vespula akrei
Landolt 2010; the mountains of Honduras are the southern
limit of the subfamily. The most speciose genera are Polistes (9
species), Mischocyttarus (9) and Zethus (11). Also, the following
three species are reported for the first time from Guatemala:
Pseudacaromenes johnsoni (Cameron 1907) New Country
Record; Agelaia cajennensis (Fabricius 1798) New Country
Record; and Protopolybia chartergoides isthmensis (Richards
1978) New Country Record. Additionally, 47 other species
probably occur here considering their distributions to the north
and south of the country, giving a minimum estimate of
136 probable species. Apparently one species has been introduced,
Vespa crabro.

A review of the literature concerning the phylogenetics of the Vespidae is presented. We also present a new phylogenetic analysis of the Vespidae based on what is by far the largest taxon sample to include molecular data, and the largest phenotypic
character dataset ever compiled. Relationships among the subfamilies are Euparagiinae + (Masarinae + (Eumeninae + (Stenogastrinae + (Polistinae + Vespinae)))), with all the subfamilies monophyletic. A single origin of eusociality is thus supported. Our results empirically supersede all previous treatments and should be the preferred scaffold of the family for studies of social behavior.

Fifty-one genera and 182 species of vespid wasps, belonging to four subfamilies, have been recorded from Iran. A catalog for the region is provided. Locality data for 64 species which were collected or examined during this study are presented. Among them, 10 species represent new records for Iran. An illustrated key to the recorded genera is also presented.

This study provides the first annotated check list of the Vespidae of Pakistan. It is based on the National Insect Museum collection and various studies in Pakistan. Among 105 identified taxa, 77 species and 28 subspecies are recorded in the four subfamilies Eumeninae, Masarinae, Polistinae and Vespinae. Three new records for the fauna of Pakistan are added, namely Anterhynchium mellyi, Antepipona ovalis and Eumenes coronatus coronatus. Among the total, 12 species/subspe-cies are endemic to Pakistan, namely Ancistrocerus pakistanus, Antepipona luteipes, Antodynerus flavescens karachien-sis, Celonites nursei, Cyrtolabulus karachiensis, Eustenancistrocerus (Parastenancistrocerus) baluchistanensis, Katamenes dimidiatus watsoni, Knemodynerus lahorensis, Leptochilus (Neoleptochilus) hina, Leptochilus (Neoleptochi-lus) mirificus, Leptochilus (Neoleptochilus) umerolatus and Tachyancistrocerus pakistanus. Antepipona varentzowi (Morawitz, 1896) and Polistes rothneyi quatei van der Vecht, 1968 were incorrectly reported from Pakistan.
