MP3 is a standard that is used for encoding/decoding audio data. The standard can lower audio bit rate significantly without any loss. For this reason, it is key to understand how it does so, and secondly, find out if it is doable. Raw audio signals carry large data quantities and are neither suitable for transmission nor storage [2]. Therefore it is necessary to compress audio and at the same time maintain its quality as required by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). MP3 was developed by the Motion Pictures Experts Group for audio and video compression. It is composed of three modes; the third referred to as Layer III. It is this layer that lowers raw-audio data bit rates from i.e. 1.4 Megabits per second to just 128 kilobits per second and can still reconstruct the signals to a level comparable to the original [3]. The objective of this paper is to review and provide a simple idea of what Layer III does in relations to audio compression and decompression.

Mp3 compression is commonly used to reduce the size of digital music files but introduces a number of potentially audible artifacts, especially at low bitrates. We investigated whether listeners prefer CD quality to mp3 files at various bitrates (96 kb/s to 320 kb/s), and whether this preference is affected by musical genre. Thirteen trained listeners completed an A/B comparison task judging CD quality and compressed files. Listeners significantly preferred CD quality to mp3 files up to 192 kb/s for all musical genres. In addition, we observed a significant effect of expertise (sound engineers vs. musicians) and musical genres (electric v.s acoustic music).

This work contributes to the multimedia security fields by given that more protected steganography technique which ensures message confidentiality and integrity. An Advanced Least Significant Bit (ALSB) technique is presented in order to meet audio steganography requirements, which are imperceptibility, capacity, and robustness. An extensive evaluation study was conducted measuring the performance of proposed NLSB algorithm. A set of factors were measured and used during evaluation, this includes; Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Bit Error Rate. MP3 Audio files from five different audio generators were used during evaluation. Results indicated that ALSB outperforms standard Least Significant Bit (SLSB) technique. Moreover, ALSB can be embedding an utmost of 750 kb into MP3 file size less than 2 MB with 30db average achieving enhanced capacity capability.
