This paper describes an open and extensive validation study carried out by the Specialist Committee on Ships in Operation at Sea (SOS) of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) on the newly developed SHOPERA-NTUA-NTU-MARIC (SNNM) wave-added resistance prediction method. The SNNM method aims at a simple, fast and transparent determination of the added resistance in regular waves of arbitrary encounter directions, even when the hull geometry is not available. Prior to the validation study, a series of acceptance criteria for the new method were specified by the committee. Contributions of 1,477 added resistance experimental data samples from 8 institutions were collected, analyzed and crosschecked with satisfactory outcome, which finally led to the inclusion of the new method into the ITTC recommended sea trial procedure as an important progress. Some aspects of concerns are discussed in detail and further work in the future is recommended. Keywords: Added resistance in waves of arbitrary direction; SNNM empirical method; ship speed power trials; wave correction when ship geometry unavailable; uncertainties in tank tests in waves.

MGPS Cofferdam is an equipment to be attached at the submerge part of the ship’s hull, to create an watertight environment for the safety cutting, welding, or another underwater activities. The activity here for the MGPS Cofferdam is the changing of the rise pipe at side of the submerged part of hull.

In this paper, a combined use of dimensional analysis (DA) and modern statistical design of experiment (DOE) methodologies is proposed for a hydrodynamics experiment where there are a large number of variables. While DA is well-known, DOE is still unfamiliar to most ocean engineers although it has been shown to be useful in many engineering and non-engineering applications. To introduce

A hydrofoil craft is known for the ability to lift its hull out of the water, increasing the hydrodynamic efficiency of the boat. This work details the experimental process of developing a computational control system for the foils of a prototype hydrofoil craft. The thesis objective is to develop a control law that when combined with a careful integration of mechanical and electronic components, can maneuver the hydrofoils. Optimal linear quadratic regulators and PID control were the methods utilized. Successful foil control laws were obtained. The foil control system achieved is intended to serve as the foundation for craft motion control, a necessary element for applications in marine dynamics.

This article aims to characterize the National Seaboard of Angola. To this end, we analyzed the way in which the current NMR is constituted, how it works and, using recommendations, certain changes were indicated for its improvement. Thus, the efficiency of the current NMR was problematized, based on the hypothesis that it still does not correspond to the needs that the Angolan coast presents, from the point of view of its monitoring of variations in the average sea water level. In order to achieve the proposed objective, the documentary and bibliographic research technique was used, as well as the deductive method with a quantitative approach. After analyzing the data collected in the field, it was concluded that the current National Seaboard of Angola does not yet meet the needs, and in order for it to establish itself as an efficient monitoring system, it will need to be improved based on some recommendations presented in this article.

In this paper, an experimental investigation, an analytical analysis and a numerical model of a typical four-point bending test on a honeycomb sandwich panel are proposed. The honeycomb core is modelled as a single solid layer of equivalent material properties. Analytical and numerical (finite element) homogenization approaches are used to compute the effective properties of the honeycomb core. A general kinematic model (unified formulation) has been adopted and used for the modelling of honeycomb sandwich panel submitted to the bending test. A comparative study of major classes of representative theories has been considered. Qualitative and quantitative assessments of displacement, stress have been presented and discussed.
