Abstract—The paper presents the case study of SF6 circuit breaker failure during switching-off an unloaded and relative long 400 kV transmission line. Both breaking chambers of the circuit breaker were destroyed. Due to the specific place and type of fault the relay protection system did not operate during circuit breaker failure and transients have been recorded only by a power quality monitoring system installed in the nearby line bay. Recorded events were used for circuit breaker post-mortem analysis. Simulations and fault analysis were carried out using EMTP-RV software.

Vacuum circuit breaker technology based on double-break vacuum interrupters has become the most requirements of high voltage circuit breakers that not environmentally harmful. The vacuum interrupter has an excellent ability to deal with the steep rising part of the transient recovery voltage, which makes it faster in the current interruption process. This paper presents results of computer simulations conditioned by capacitive currents switching-offs by using single and double interrupters of vacuum circuit breakers. These results demonstrate that use of double-break circuit breakers leads to notable decreasing of switching overvoltages and allows in the same time to meet the dielectric requirements for high voltage vacuum circuit breakers

When the starting of a large (>1000 HP) induction motor is aborted and a circuit breaker interrupts the current, a transient overvoltage is observed. The magnitude of this transient is greatest for the first interrupted phase; hence the behavior of only this phase is studied. The motor at standstill is modeled as a three-phase reactor with an isolated neutral. Analysis

This paper presents a study of Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) of a Circuit Breaker (CB) connected to transmission line with presence of Braking Resistor (BR). In order to effectively control the transient stability of the synchronous generator during the dynamic period, the BR unit is located at the generator terminal bus through the thyristor switching circuit and near the circuit breaker. It is shown in this paper that, when a fault occurs in the transmission line and circuit breaker acts, existence of breaking resistor and its natural performance during instability eliminates TVR in the circuit breaker completely. The simulations are implemented by using the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP/ATP).

A multi-break interrupters of vacuum circuit breakers has become the most requirements of high voltage circuit breakers with high breaking capacity that not environmentally harmful. In this article the dielectric properties of multi-break vacuum circuit breakers were considered. Velocities of dielectric strength restoration of multi-break vacuum interrupters were analyzed.

This paper presents the analysis of transient recovery voltage (TRV) under the presence of a saturable-core high temperature superconducting fault current limiter (HTS FCL). Calculations are performed for the case when an equivalent air core reactor that provides comparable fault current limitation as the FCL is inserted in the line. Simulations are performed using different approaches that comprise the direct solution of the related equations solved in a spreadsheet. This is compared with results obtained using EMTP-RV® and PSCAD® software simulation tools. The obtained results concur to show that the saturable-core HTS FCL has a significantly lower effect on the rate of rise of the circuit breaker TRV as compared with the air core reactor.
