Abstract A simple and efficient method is demonstrated for the synthesis of benzimidazoles via cyclocondensation of o-phenylenediamine with aldehydes in the presence of catalytic amount of tert-butyl nitrite. All the reactions were carried out at room temperature while the desired products were obtained in good to excellent yields.

A simple, highly efficient and green procedure for the condensation of o-phenylenediamine with α-diketones in the presence of catalytic quantity of phthalic acid(0.0083 g, 5mol%) at room temperature was done. Using this method, quinoxaline derivatives as biological fascinating compound are produced in good to excellent yields and short reaction times.
