Why are Many Species of Animals and Birds Getting Extinct? (original) (raw)
Last Updated : 23 Jul, 2025
Hundreds of species of animals and birds have been identified as extinct worldwide for various reasons****.** These reasons are discussed below:
- **Habitat degradation and Habitat loss are the main causes of extinction. It occurs due to deforestation, and clearing of forests for settlement and agriculture purposes.
- **Climate change alters habitats and food sources which makes species survival difficult by putting stress on ecologically adapted species.
- **Pollutants such as pesticides and plastics negatively impact wildlife.
- **Illegal hunting-killing through hunting, fishing and trade reduces the number of species. But **invasive species can also wreak havoc on ecosystems, either by eating or competing with natives.
- **Disease Outbreaks: Infectious diseases, particularly those introduced by humans or other animals, can spread rapidly among vulnerable species populations. This leads to mass die-offs and extinctions.
- **Loss of Genetic Diversity: Small population sizes and fragmented habitats can reduce genetic diversity within species, making them more susceptible to environmental changes and less able to adapt to new conditions.
- **Human Activities: Activities such as urbanization, industrialization, and infrastructure development can directly destroy habitats, fragment landscapes, and disturb ecosystems, leading to declines in species populations and eventual extinctions.
