About us
We are one of the nation's first health departments and trace our roots back to 1799, when Paul Revere was named Boston's first health officer. Back then, the board of health was formed to fight a potential outbreak of cholera. Taking innovative strides to save lives, health officials posted signs on lampposts, held meetings and led an early-day public information campaign to reduce deaths due to cholera, a highly preventable disease. Two hundred years later, that tradition of prevention continues through the Boston Public Health Commission. While we are the country's oldest health department, we pride ourselves on having some of the most innovative services for our residents. Described as "the most activist arm of city government," by the Boston Globe, the Commission has a vigorous commitment to the health of Boston.

Thank you so much to the Boston Public Library for their support in helping to get the word out about the Boston Community Health Needs Assessment Survey! We have appreciated being able to table at local branches like the Grove Hall Branch today during their monthly housing clinic to reach Boston residents, share about the survey and resources available to support their health and well-being. Our public libraries play such a critical role in our local public health system, fostering community, connecting residents with health resources and programming, and offering spaces of refuge and learning. Boston residents, if you haven't taken the Boston CHNA Survey, it's not too late! Help inform community health plans, priorities, and initiatives to support public health by taking the survey and sharing with your friends, neighbors, or communities you serve. I was honored to join Dr. Don Berwick, cofounder of IHI, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Dr. Kedar Mate, President and Chief Executive Officer of IHI, and Thea James, MD, MPH, MBA, Vice President of Mission Boston Medical Center (BMC), Dr. K. Torian Easterling, SVP for Population and Community Health, One Brooklyn Health System and Rachel Thornton, MD, PhD, FAAP, Vice President and Chief Equity Officer Nemours Children's Health for the IHI Leadership Alliance Fall Meeting: Innovate, Collaborate, Care: Accelerating Forward. Dr. James and I were guests on a live version of "Turn on the Lights", a thought-provoking podcast hosted by Dr. Kedar Mate and Dr. Don Berwick that offers new insights on some of the most vexing healthcare related problems in our world today. One of which is the persistence of health inequity, even in resource rich cities like Boston, which we discussed with the audience, as well as what the healthcare system can do about it. Our discussion ended with optimism and hope about what we have achieved thus far and what we can achieve in the future. Episodes of "Turn the Lights" can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ee6FEx2G. I'm sure that this episode will be posted soon. Thanks IHI for the opportunity Boston Public Health Commission, City of Boston, Health Equity Compact, Krystal G. Local health departments (LHDs) play a crucial role in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from public health emergencies and disasters and, as such, are on the frontlines of the fight against the negative health impacts of climate change. As climate change is a complex issue, a comprehensive strategy that engages nontraditional partners, like Health in All Policies, is needed. NACCHO, with support from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, has created a new resource ‘‘A Health in All Policies approach to addressing the health impacts of climate change’. In this resource, three local health departments —the Boston Public Health Commission, the Pima County Health Department and the City of New Orleans Health Department —discuss how they use Health in All Policies to address the impacts of climate change on their communities. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enHd8wfP #HiAP #HealthEquity #PublicHealth #EnvironmentalHealth #ClimateChange - Take the Boston 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment Survey at boston.gov/bphc-bostonCHNA. The survey is confidential, voluntary, open to residents of Boston age 14 and up, available in 8 languages in addition to English, and takes 7-10 minutes to complete. The Boston 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment Survey is one part of a comprehensive effort to identify the strengths, challenges, priorities, and opportunities to improve the health of Boston residents and communities. Data gathered through the Boston Community Health Needs Assessment informs community health plans, funding priorities, program development, and can help deepen impact of collective efforts to advance health equity in Boston. Take the survey, share the survey, get involved, and learn more about the community health needs assessment at boston.gov/bphc-bostonCHNA. If you have any questions about the survey, email bostonchna@bphc.org.
