Nearly 200 scientific innovators came together at this week’s Cell and Gene Therapy Symposium at the Children’s National Research & Innovation Campus, where we explored the promising future of life-changing treatments targeting diseases at the cellular level. The shared vision among experts from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., is forging a community that will save lives and create regional expertise in the next generation of rare disease treatments. Recently, we hosted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Innovation Center and members of the Cell and Gene Therapy Access Model Team for a tour of our lab, blood bank, Sickle Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Clinics. Physicians, clinical staff, administrators and a patient shared insights into our sickle cell and gene therapy programs, providing a comprehensive view of our services. We’re excited to collaborate to improve access to care.
Kidney Week is the American Society of Nephrology’s annual meeting and scientific exposition, featuring advances in treatment, research and technology in the fight against kidney disease. This year’s conference was held in San Diego and hosted thousands of participants from around the world, including Children’s National doctors, current/former fellows and faculty!

The Congenital Heart Initiative is the first longitudinal registry for adults with congenital heart disease. Last month, families from the HME Hope Program joined the Neonatal Neurology team in the annual Race for Every Child. These children were born with a rare condition called hemimegalenchepaly (HME), which can cause uncontrollable seizures that disrupt brain function. Doctors at Children’s National have developed a successful treatment that’s less invasive to stop these seizures in infants aged 3 months or less. Stories like these inspire, motivate and uplift our team and it’s incredible to see how the shared journeys of these four families brought them closer.
