Don’t blame your CMO. Generally CMO’s have the shortest tenure of any C-level executive. Why? Because they are rarely set up for success. These 3 key blockers come up again and again: 1. Lack of resources - they’re asked to do more with less. The math on how much pipeline is needed rarely works. And brand support is an afterthought. 2. No C-suite buy-in on the GTM model – there’s rarely functional alignment on the ICP, on the accounts that will drive the greatest LTV. Therefore, the product isn’t being purpose built for the ICP. And Sales and Marketing don’t orchestrate actions based on a common account strategy. 3. No seat at the technology table – functional areas work off silo’d data, disconnected point solutions, and different metrics. CMO's have a strategic vision of how they want GTM technology to work, but often don't have the influence to implement it. Here’s a real-life horror story from a CMO I spoke with recently: The CMO was hired and the budget they were promised was cut in half while the top line revenue goal doubled YoY, with no way to track pipeline or conversions. Operating partners were in every aspect of the business, going over and around them. ETeam was not aligned on the ICP and therefore resources weren't focused and win rates were low. This is not how companies thrive. CMO’s need to be set up for success by having reality-based conversations on resources, aligning the C-suite to the GTM, and giving them influence on the direction of the tech stack. - Demandbase reposted this
