But we must do it anyway. "We need courage to listen and to speak. Silence around this war advances neither justice, nor peace. Avoiding conversations with friends, colleagues or neighbors will not solve conflict, nor will it slow the spread of antisemitism and Islamophobia. The Hamas attack on #Israel on October 7th, including the taking of hostages, and the subsequent humanitarian crisis in #Gaza, resulting in over 40,000 deaths, have sparked deep grief and anger. In such a challenging environment, envisioning dialogue seems difficult. However, the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies (ICJS) believes that fostering interreligious dialogue is essential. Our mission focuses on dismantling religious bias and building interreligious communities. In our initial response in October 2023, we called for a three-part action plan: to grieve and mourn, to reach out and maintain dialogue, and to stand against religious bigotry. One year later, we reaffirm this call to action. We continue to advocate for grieving, outreach, and standing up against bias. ICJS has actively engaged more than 500 people in the Baltimore region in ICJS workshops on interreligious understanding and dialogue, as well as in our facilitated dialogue sessions on Israel and Gaza. Looking ahead, we remain committed to partnering with groups seeking continued dialogue during these troubled times. I don't think that charismatic Christians as a whole are a threat to American democracy. I grew up Evangelical. I grew up even Charismatic in many ways. But there are particular sets of leaders and networks of leaders who have embraced very extreme theologies in this world. "They believe that God is mandating for them to take over all the different segments of society, to Christianize society. According to their vision of Christianity and their interpretation of the Bible, they use phrases like taking dominion, believing that it is their responsibility as Christians to take over. "These are some of the same leaders who have gathered around Trump, been many of his evangelical advisors, been many of his chief Christian propagandists. My worry is that for many of them, their attachment to Trump, it has very little to do with Christianity, with American democracy, and much more to do with fulfilling what they think is God's will."https://lnkd.in/eQCuGCdf
