1:30 pm | duck drive yesterday Ginger and I went on our first Richmond area duck drive, stopping at the reservoir a Brandermill, the drainage ponds near the landfill/wal-mart in Colonial Heights and City Point in Hopewell, then we went to Williamsburg for a few ponds there and the Diascund Reservoir. We saw a lot of great ducks, nothing new, but Coots, Ring-Necks, Pie-Billed Grebes, Ruddys, Canvasbacks, and American Wigeon, a Loon, Hooded Megansers, and probably some others I'm forgetting.........It was at least as much diversity as any of our Maryland drives. On the way home we stopped for doughnuts at Country Style. Wow do they have some tasty doughnuts. Tonight, an adventure in making a french onion soup (Comment on this) |

10:49 am | Cold Today is my last day of my long winter break, and I'm at home with a cold. I think I was fighting it anyway, and our New Years activity, running to Carytown to watch the ball rise, then running home, didn't help. I am still glad we did the run, it was a nice way to end the year, since we couln't have done it last year. We've aalso been going to the movies, seeing Slumdog Millionaire and Milk, which were both great. We may go later this week to see Pineapple Express at the Byrd. (2 Comments |Comment on this) |

10:07 am | hello. I haven't forgotten my lj, though I did recently set up a facebook. Christmas was great, Ginger and I stayed at my mom's most of the week, it was great spending time with the fam. We took a day to go to Baltimore and went for a tour/tasting at Clipper City Brewing (a great deal if you're up that way). We have exciting New Years plans: to run to Carytown, see the festivities, then run back after midnight. It's a way to cap off the year we started running. I'll make some resolutions for this year later. (Comment on this) |

10:43 am | What a week. last weekend was the state fair, Ginger Mom, Dani and I went. I love the state fair...especially on demolition derby day.......This week I also began subbing....the first day I did high school math, which was a little hectic, I may not try that again, but Friday I did middle school, and that was much better.......Other excitement this week was that Ginger got me a wonderful present of an xbox 360, and Carl gave me his copy of Grand Theft Auto 4, so I've been involved with that in what free time I've had, and on Wednesday we saw Atmosphere at Toad's...good show, I've only ever seen him at festivals before, but he played a really long set...last night I joined Mom and Dani at Busch Gardens for Howl-O-Scream, which was fun but very crowded.....I finally feel busy again, its so good to have a job after not all summer.....ok, im off to eat breakfast and go canvass (1 Comment |Comment on this) |

10:22 am | I am really excited about the olympics! I love the Olympics. Not only is it a chance to see sports that don't usually make it on TV, its also a chance to see athletes from around the world. There are teams from almost every country in the world, despite politics. I not hearing those people who say they are boycotting this Olympics. (1 Comment |Comment on this) |

9:58 pm | back porch, purple martins, dutch gap bridge, obama It's been a fun weekend here.....on Saturday Ginger and I went by the grand opening of the Obama office in our neighborhood......there must have been 150-200 people there....very crowded, but they had stations set up for different issues and each one had a worker to talk on that issue and a printout from the website's issues page to correspond.......its in an old plumbing supply warehouse and very spacious.....when we got home, I went online and ordered an Obama hat, and today i noticed that the one of the maintenance guys in my building had the same hat...we also went over to likeadeuce's to watch Batman Begins....it was good, and now i feel prepared to see this new Batmovie when i have a Batchance..........yesterday we went to Dutch Gap to see the recently completed trail, its now a 4.5 mile loop instead of a 4 mile each way out-and-back, so it makes for a much nicer stroll around the tidal pool and fly ash pit.........tonight we went to the backporch initiative meeting at Globehopper coffee.....they have Monday night roundtable discussions about environmental issues.....this week was about restoring and maintaining old houses, so its something that my apply to us eventually.........after we left the meeting, we could see the purple martins beginning to swarm over Shockoe Bottom...........so we sat in the parking lot under the trees they roost in........it was quite a spectacle, about 10,000 birds flew into a row of twenty trees all at once.....it took only about 10 minutes for them to land and get situated.......for those of us on the ground, we were surrounded by a huge flock of birds flying all around us.............it was awesome......hopefully we can get back tomorrow and i can take a picture....if not, theres a purple martin festival on Saturday (Comment on this) |

10:53 pm | Part 3: Wisconsin First we stopped at the Dells, which is kind of like a Wisconsin version of Gatlinburg, beautiful scenery, excessive tourist stuff, gift shops and a Ripleys MuesumSo what do you eat in The Dells? a lumberjack meal**( Read more...Collapse )** (Comment on this) |
10:34 pm | Part 2: Chicago We stayed the second night of our trip at a KOA in Union, IL. We stayed in KOA cabins every night in the US, its one of the few options to have three beds under 50 bucks, and KOA's are really nice....more about them later..........this one, however, was next door to a Wild West Town. Wild West Towns are common out west, but this is a rarity east of the Mississippi. We rode the commuter train into Chicago, where free trolleys wisked all over downtown....The whole public transit system was incredibly affordable and efficient, but i guess thats what the high gas tax gets you...........here are obligatory photos of downtown chicago**( Read more...Collapse )** (3 Comments |Comment on this) |

10:55 pm | 2008, the ocho Hello. Its a new year, and I made several new years resolutions. After a very fun new years eve of Futurama and board games at lucy2905's I resolved to this year: Get a real job, lose some weight, start running, learn some Spanish, and have less stuff. So far, I've taken several bags to charity, tossed a few pieces of furniture, done well on my Spanish tapes, and on Wednesday I have a meeting for my internship and on Saturday, I'm going to a running store to look at shoes that don't hurt to run in. Ive also signed up with Ginger and AL for the Frederick 5k. So far, all 5 resolutions still stand. This past weekend, Ginger and I did the all day Calmes Neck Christmas Bird Count, spent the pre-dawn hours playing tapes of owl calls in a cemetery near mt weather and the day tromping through cow and horse pastures counting birds. One new species for us: Northern Saw-whet Owl. Yesterday, we drove to Verona, VA to visit a house where a Painted Bunting had been reported. And we saw it! What a wild looking bird. Today is the first day of the Virginia General Assembly, so my annual roundup of bills is over here: http://virginiaboulevard.wordpress.com/ (Comment on this) |
