David Beckham chose to stand with NFL legend Tom Brady rather than Rob McElhenney as Birmingham City host Wrexham in League One action.

The clash between the Blues and the Red Dragons represents a battle of unbeaten teams with American owners in one of the most intriguing EFL clashes of the 2024/25 season. In a match described as ’the Hollywood derby’, Brady’s Birmingham City clash with Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney’s Wrexham at St. Andrew's on Monday night.

Brady followed Reynolds and McElhenney’s lead after the duo teamed up to purchase Wrexham back in November 2020. The duo have since become symbols of Welsh football around the world thanks to the exposure their platforms have bought to the club and area, largely through the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

After watching their success, Brady decided he wanted in. In August 2023 on his 46th birthday, the seven-time Super Bowl champion announced he had acquired a minor stake in Birmingham City after the team made a promising start to the season under former coach John Eustace.

The iconic former quarterback was in attendance for the first home game of the 2023/24 season, a 1-0 win over Leeds. But results suffered after Eustace’s controversial departure, and the Blues were relegated to the third tier.

Wrexham’s promotion means the two teams are in the same division, battling for a place in the Championship come the end of the season. For their blockbuster clash, former England captain and football legend Beckham was in attendance - but opted to stand alongside Brady rather than show loyalty to a good friend in Deadpool star Reynolds.

While Reynolds isn’t in attendance this evening, McElhenney is watching on with his Wrexham delegation. However, it seems Beckham - who has his own club in the form of Inter Miami of MLS - is siding with Brady for the first meeting between the two clubs, watching on alongside son Romeo.

In the game, Jack Marriott scored as Wrexham took full advantage of an early corner inside the opening few minutes. However, Birmingham hit back as striker Jay Stansfield fired in an equaliser after 22 minutes to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

Wrexham sit atop the league heading into the contest, with a superior goal difference to Charlton Athletic having won four and drawn one of their five games. Meanwhile, Birmingham lie sixth with 11 points courtesy of three wins and a draw with a game in hand on their Welsh rivals.
