Queenswood (original) (raw)

Queenswood, Pretoria

The central suburb of Queenswood lies just beyond the equally popular and fairly sedate suburb of Colbyn, close to Kilner Park, Moregloed and Villeria, spread over either side of Soutpansberg Road. It borders on the greenery of the Colbyn Valley Nature Area not far from the Rietondale Research Station Esperimental Farm.

The obvious advantage to staying in Queenswood is its access to the centre of Pretoria, Hatfield and the University grounds, whilst the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens are just down the road, on the other side of the N1.

In Pretoria Central see tourist highlights that include Church Square - designed by the Dutch architect, Sytze Wierda, in the Italian Renaissance style, it includes a statue of Paul Kruger and some of the most incredible architecture - the old Church Street cemetery, also known as the Heroes Acre, Burgers Park, the oldest park in the city across the road from which you will also find Melrose House with its own museum and also perfect for tea, the Kruger House Museum on Church Street, and the National Zoological Gardens also known simply as 'the zoo'.

Also make time for the African Window Museum or the National Cultural History Museum, one of the city's favourite museums in Visagie Street. Spend time at the National Botanical Gardens in Cussonia Avenue. A beautiful garden it is divided in two by a 50 metre high quartzite outcrop. With shade trees offering perfect picnic sites, paved nature trails that make strolling through the vegetation a pleasure, and a restaurant for tea, there is every reason to take time out for this experience.
