The experiment was conducted in three replicates in pots having 4 kg of sieved soil mixed with different doses of chromium, 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 mg·kg−1, and lead, 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 mg·kg−1. The experiment was conducted for 80 days, and roots were harvested two times, i.e., at 40 days and 80 days after sowing. Metal accumulation in the roots was determined by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. The result of the study indicated that C. iria has the maximum potential to accumulate both the metals in its roots than other two plants. The order of chromium metal accumulation was found to be C. iria > E. sativa > A. aspera. On the other hand, the order of lead metal accumulation was found to b...

(Family: Papaveraceae) is a species well known for its diverse alkaloids (100 different benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs)). L-tyrosine serves as a precursor of several specific metabolites like BIAs. It has been used as an antitussive and potent analgesic to alleviate mild to extreme pain since ancient times. The extraction of pharmaceutically important alkaloids like morphine and codeine from poppy plant reflects the need for the most suitable and standard methods. Several analytical and extraction techniques have been reported in open literature for morphine, codeine and other important alkaloids which play a vital function in drug development and drug discovery. Many studies suggest that opioids are also responsible for adverse effects or secondary complications like dependence and withdrawal. In recent years, opium consumption and addiction are the most important risk factors. Many evidence-based reviews suggest that opium consumption is directly linked o...

Metal concentrations ranged from 6.65−54.6 mg/kg for Ni, 25.2−250.0 mg/kg for Zn, 83.3−139.1 mg/kg for Pb, and 11940.0−31250.0 mg/kg for Fe. The level of metal contamination was assessed using sediment quality guidelines, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), pollution Load Index (PLI),Nemerow’s pollution index (PIN), and potential ecological risk index. Pb exceeded the sediment quality guidelines at all sites indicating a potential threat to the river ecosystem. (Igeo) and EF also showed moderate to severe enrichment for Pb. Potential ecological risk (RI) showed low risk in the sediments, and Pb is the major contributor to ecological risk. Overall, pollution indices revealed comparably higher contamination of the sediments in the downstream sites than in the upstream site. PCA and correlation matrix analysis indicated both anthropogenic and natural origins for metals. Amon...

The hazardous nature of the chemical surfactant utilized in the production of cosmetics has caused alarm on a global scale. Therefore, bacterial biosurfactants (BS) are becoming increasingly popular in industrial product production as a biocompatible, low-toxic alternative surfactant. Chemical surfactants can induce allergic responses and skin irritations; thus, they should be replaced with less harmful substances for skin health. The cosmetic industry seeks novel biological alternatives to replace chemical compounds and improve product qualities. Most of these chemicals have a biological origin and can be obtained from plant, bacterial, fungal, and algal sources. Various biological molecules have intriguing capabilities, such as biosurfactants, vitamins, antioxidants, pigments, enzymes, and peptides. These are safe, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly than chemical options. Plant-bas...

The energy demand is sustained using lignocellulosic biomass to produce bioethanol. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCBs) is the point of attention in replacing the dependence on fossil fuels. The recalcitrant structure of the lignocellulosic biomass is disrupted using effective pretreatment techniques that separate complex interlinked structures among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Pretreatment of biomass involves various physical, chemical, biological, and physiochemical protocols which are of importance, dependent upon their individual or combined dissolution effect. Physical pretreatment involves a reduction in the size of the biomass using mechanical, extrusion, irradiation, and sonification meth...

Cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon or true cinnamon) is a popular, expensive aromatic condiment and flavor... more Cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon or true cinnamon) is a popular, expensive aromatic condiment and flavoring agent cum medicinal plant that houses a major number of pharmaceutically active aromatic essential oils and its principal compound cinnamaldehyde, and its derivatives cinnamic acid, cinnamate, etc. In addition to its culinary use, in ancient Ayurvedic texts as well as in folkloric medicine, this plant and precisely the bark and bark powder have been reported as a remedy for respiratory, digestive, and gynecological ailments. It has been evaluated clinically and preclinically for its prominent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anticancer, lipid-lowering, and cardio- and neuroprotective efficacies. Commercially this plant is highly valued in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. We have summarized the recent relevant scientific evidence on the botanic characterization, distribution, traditional uses, pharmacological activities, phytochemistry, qualitative and quantitative estimation and extraction of important secondary metabolites, genetic diversity assessment, biotechnological breakthroughs, cultivation, and propagation along with industrial application and clinical studies of Cinnamon species to assess future perspectives for Cinnamon as a pharmacologically leading genus of interest. Secondary metabolite extraction, isolation, and identification using HPTLC, LC-MS, HPLC, and GC-MS, along with genetic diversity assessment through molecular markers and biotechnological advancement (in vitro culture, embryo rescue, genetic transformation, molecular marker-based polymorphism assessment) contributing collectively to cinnamon improvement programs, are conclusively studied and reported in association with phytochemical and pharmacological discoveries via clinical and preclinical trials. The implementation of collective knowledge of research in areas of chemical biology, biotechnology, and pharmacology will directly benefit cost-effective breeding and cultivation program and establishment of encyclopedic database on various fields associated with Cinnamon research, aid in selection of industrially profitable elite germplasm with improved screening and harvesting protocols for Cinnamon-derived components, and elucidate a vast role of Cinnamon as an integral compound of complementary and alternative medicine.
