The participants in this study were 40 Master 2 students of Didactics of English as a Foreign Language, Djillali Liabes University, Sidi Bel Abbes Algeria. In order to find out the effects of Microsoft PowerPoint on EFL students' attitude and anxiety, two main research tools were employed in this study: a questionnaire that was addressed to 40 Master 2 students of Didactics of English as a Foreign Language and an interview for 10 participants, randomly selected from the forty participants who answered the questionnaire. After the data had been analysed, the results revealed a positive attitude and low anxiety among students towards Microsoft PowerPoint. These concluding results promote the use of ICT and encourage EFL teachers to use these tools in the most beneficial way to improve students' level of English and motivate them.  Do students feel anxious when lessons are presented by Microsoft PowerPoint to learn English? In this respect, written academic discourse is a considerably broad notion requiring consideration of various aspects both on the linguistic and extra-linguistic planes. The present work linguostylistically (on both semantic and metasemiotic levels) analyzed the functional aspect of using absolute constructions, a predicative construction in which non-finite forms of the verbs stand in predicate relation to their overt subject, in technical writing. The results revealed that the distinctive morphosyntactic structure of absolute constructions, although purely linguistic, would provide to serve functions far beyond linguistics proper. Otherwise stated, absolute constructions being concise and laconic are capable of communicating complete informative line within a sentence, giving an opportunity to fit more information into a smaller volume. Interestingly, contrary to widely believed notion, the preposition of them rather than postposition, preferred in the scientific register, could be allocated to their rhetorical impact. In addition, due to their frequency in this style, they need to be paid their deserved attention while teaching EAP to engineering students.

Otherwise stated, if in fiction the emotive-expressive-evaluative tones are believed to make an aesthetic impact on the reader, here language is definitely to express the author‟s approach, his evaluation of the stated facts and documents. Hence, the knowledge of vocabulary, which tends to have a great role in conveying the message, can be of optimum importance in any EAP discourse. According to Harmer (1991), “If language structures make up the skeleton of language, then it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh”...

Nevertheless, in spite of its crucial role, there seems to be some constraints on the way to an intelligible work of translation, one of which could be not being competent in the grammar of the target language. Otherwise stated, familiarity with the grammar of the target language, English here, seems to be of paramount importance for the incompetence could obviously hinder the comprehensibility of written works in general, and scientific research articles in particular. In this respect, we should hasten to add that the translation of scientific research articles from Farsi into English is not an exception. Being a great hindrance on the way to efficient scientific communication, competence in general academic vocabulary seems to be of paramount importance. The reflection of the process of scientific work can be found in the general scientific vocabulary in order to establish a convenient, rational and simple system in this register. The present work focused on the lexical dimensions of scientific discourse in the hope to illuminate the path to bring about a better understanding of one of the crucial aspects of this register which seems to be overlooked while teaching EAP to non-native learners, a pragmatically oriented system which might provide a scientifically controlled "tool", to non-native learners.

In addition, they are discoursal resources available to a scientific writer’s propositions to express uncertainty, skepticism, and open-mindedness. Research articles are an important means of communication between different members of a discourse community, and will be convincing to a certain extent only when authors are able to employ rhetorical conventions, such as hedging devices, persuasively. However, hedging is a problematic aspect in EAP learning since rarely are the learners able to hedge their statements appropriately, engineering students not being an exception. Therefore, this article tends to linguistically analyze the function of rhetorical impact of using hedging devices in the results and discussion part...

Unfortunately, it is common belief among Iranian English learners that knowledge of individual lexical items is the key to communicative competence. But alas! The outcome has shown this is counterproductive. As an anglicist teaching ESP in general and EAP in particular in my country, I feel responsible for shedding light on this issue inasmuch as I experience the lapse in my everyday professional work. It should be noted that in this Global Village, in which English is considered the Lingua Franca of science and technology, focusing on phraseological units as a sub-branch of lexical proficiency seems to be of paramount importance to avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication. The present article makes an effort to highlight the role of contextual usages of these units in TEFL to help the learners reach the desired native-like produ...

To fulfill the goal of writing on different scientific domains and publishing, it is of paramount importance to be familiar with the peculiarities of the written style of the language of the discourse community. As far as engineering disciplines are concerned, foremost with electronic engineering in mind, of all various stylistic problems in scientific/technical writing, “nominalization”, as one of the most distinctive linguistic characteristics of academic writing, deserves a lot of attention. Since academic writing is often characterized by high frequency of nominalization, in the hope of providing a new insight into the development of writing for engineering, the present article aims to reveal the importance of the salutary effects of this systemic resource that will put the students and academics on the pa...

The meaning or content of words used to express special phenomena or concepts, greatly constituted by the object itself, is a reflection of it in the writer's mind. The study was an attempt to disclose the functional peculiarities of technical writing on the lexical syntagmatic level of linguistic expressions, focusing on those derivatives, coinages, the creation or the very existence of which would be based on quite definite, well-fixed rules of combining morphemes according to the productive patterns of lexicology, i.e. rules determined by the lexical-morphological categories of the language under investigation, English as the Lingua Franca of science and technology. The analysis showed that in technical writing the presence of such derivatives, besides the need to name new scientific concepts, would have a tendency to acquire metasemiotic overtones. In other words, they might be generally formed by the authors under some contextual circumstances to give the utterance a more stressed effect and enhance the rhetorical impact likely to circulate in the related discourse community.
