Sie verläuft in Nord-Süd-Richtung und ist bis auf die nördliche Endstation Fern Rock Transportation Center und den daran angrenzenden Betriebshof ausschließlich unterirdisch angelegt. Die Bezeichnung als Broad Street Line leitet sich von dem befahrenen Straßenzug ab, unter dem sich der Tunnel fast zur gänzlichen Länge befindet. Es handelt sich dabei um die wichtigste Straße durch die Innenstadt in Nord-Süd-Richtung, die etwa auf halber Höhe zwischen dem Delaware und dem Schuylkill praktisch durch die ganze Stadt verläuft und der entspricht. Neben der Hauptstrecke gibt es noch eine etwa 1,9 Meilen (3,1 km) lange Zweigstrecke mit drei Stationen, die Broad/Ridge Spur unter der Ridge Avenue. Sie führt vom Nordrand der Innenstadt tangential Richtung Südosten zum Bahnhof 8th Street der Market–Frankford Line. Ursprünglich verlief dieser Abschnitt von dort aus noch weiter unter der 8th Street und der Locust Street bis zum Bahnhof 15th–16th & Locust Streets. The line, which is entirely underground except for the northern terminus at Fern Rock, has four tracks in a local/express configuration from Fern Rock to Walnut-Locust and two tracks from Lombard-South to the southern terminus at NRG station. It is one of only two rapid transit lines in the SEPTA system overall alongside the Market–Frankford Line, though Center City Philadelphia is also served by four stations of the PATCO Speedline rapid transit line which runs between downtown Philadelphia through Camden, New Jersey to Lindenwold, New Jersey. With about 115,000 boardings on an average weekday, it is the second busiest route in the SEPTA system. The line and its trains were leased to SEPTA in 1968 after it assumed operation of the city transit systems from the former Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC). Broad Street Line subway cars bear both the SEPTA logo and the seal of the City of Philadelphia to reflect the split ownership-operation arrangement.
