Für das Jahr 2020 hat die GEMA Erträge von fast einer Milliarde Euro (958,8 Mio. €; 2019: 1.069,4 Mio. €) erwirtschaftet. Aus dieser Summe schüttet sie 2021 806,5 Mio. € an ihre Mitglieder und weltweite Rechteinhaber aus. Die GEMA hat als gesetzliche Verwertungsgesellschaft die Rechtsform eines wirtschaftlichen Vereins nach § 22 BGB. Der Verein hat seinen Sitz in Berlin und wird gerichtlich und außergerichtlich durch den Vorstand der dortigen Generaldirektion vertreten. Vorstandsvorsitzender der GEMA ist seit 2007 Harald Heker. Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats ist Ralf Weigand. Darüber hinaus wird durch die GEMA deutschlandweit auch noch eine Reihe von gleichnamigen Bezirksdirektionen betrieben, welche die wirtschaftliche Vermarktung der Musikprodukte des Vereins durch Marketing- und Inkassodienstleistungen vorantreiben und überwachen. Gegründet wurde die heutige Organisation 1933 als STAGMA, seit 1947 trägt sie den Namen GEMA. Andere Verwertungsgesellschaften sind zum Beispiel in Österreich die AKM und in der Schweiz die SUISA.
