Als Pyrophosphatasen werden meist Enzyme bezeichnet, die Anionen der Diphosphorsäure (Pyrophosphate) zu Phosphat aufspalten. Die aktuell gültige Bezeichnung für diese Pyrophosphatasen ist anorganische Diphosphatasen. PPase ist die verbreitete Abkürzung, die im Folgenden verwendet wird. Daneben werden auch noch (organische) Diphosphatasen, die (organische) Derivate der Pyrophosphorsäure unter Wasseraufnahme spalten, als Pyrophosphatasen bezeichnet.
