The Next Day ist das 24. Studioalbum von David Bowie, das am 8. März 2013 erschien. Es war das erste Album mit neuem Material nach zehn Jahren. Es ist auch das erste Album des Musikers, das Platz 1 in den deutschen Album-Charts erreichte. Auch in den britischen Charts schaffte es den ersten Platz, was dem Künstler 20 Jahre zuvor das letzte Mal gelungen war. In den USA landete The Next Day auf dem 2. Platz, der dort bis dahin höchsten Position eines Bowie-Albums.

Co-produced by Bowie and longtime collaborator Tony Visconti, the album was recorded in New York City at the Magic Shop and Human Worldwide Studios between May 2011 and October 2012. It featured contributions from new musicians and returning contributors, including Gerry Leonard, Earl Slick, Gail Ann Dorsey, Steve Elson, Sterling Campbell and Zachary Alford. The sessions took place under secrecy, with all personnel involved signing non-disclosure agreements. The Next Day is primarily an art rock album, and contains many call-backs to Bowie's earlier works. The bleak lyrics are partly inspired by his reading of English and Russian history, and cover topics such as tyranny and violence. The characters vary from soldiers, assassins, school shooters and street gangs. The cover art was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook and is an adapted version of Bowie's 1977 album "Heroes". It contains a white square with the album's title obscuring his face and the "Heroes" title crossed out. The debut single "Where Are We Now?" and announcement of the album were posted online, without prior announcement, on 8 January 2013, Bowie's 66th birthday. It made headlines around the world, surprising fans and media who had assumed he retired from music. Preceded by a viral marketing campaign, The Next Day topped charts worldwide and debuted at number one and two on the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200, respectively.
