À l'origine, il fut créé en 1881 par William Tecumseh Sherman comme School of Application for Infantry and Cavalry (école d'application pour les officiers de l'infanterie et de la cavalerie). En 1907, elle changea de nom pour s'appeler School of the Line (école de la Ligne). アメリカ陸軍指揮幕僚大学（アメリカりくぐんしきばくりょうだいがく、英: Command and General Staff College 略称CGSC）は、アメリカ陸軍の高級将校を養成するための大学であるが、大学院修士課程に相当するコースもあり、カンザス大学と提携した修士課程も併設されている。ウィリアム・シャーマン将軍によって、1881年にカンザス州レブンワースに歩兵連隊と騎兵隊のための学校として開校された。アメリカ陸軍で大佐以上の階級になるためにはこの学校を卒業しなければならない。この学校に入学できるのは、アメリカ陸軍の少佐か中佐で指名者リストに載った現役軍人、あるいは同盟国軍の将校で双方の国から推薦を受けた現役軍人だけである。普通の学校のように、願書を出して受験するような方式ではない。アメリカ陸軍の将校だけでなく、同盟国の将校が留学してくることもあり、陸上自衛隊からも過去に何人も留学している。有名なところでは佐藤正久が留学している。また、陸上自衛隊の教育訓練並びに研究開発等に関する連絡業務のため、2～3年任期で連絡幹部（最初のころは1等陸佐、現在は2等陸佐）が派遣されている。現地では準教官に任命され、日本関連の科目の教育のため教壇に立つことも多い。 (ja)

The college was established in 1881 by William Tecumseh Sherman as the School of Application for Infantry and Cavalry (later simply the Infantry and Cavalry School), a training school for infantry and cavalry officers. In 1907 it changed its title to the School of the Line. The curriculum expanded throughout World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War and continues to adapt to include lessons learned from current conflicts. In addition to the main campus at Fort Leavenworth, the college has satellite campuses at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Fort Lee, Virginia; Fort Gordon, Georgia; and Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. The college also maintains a distance-learning modality for some of its instruction. (en)

Uczelnia została założona w roku 1881 przez gen. Williama Tecumseha Shermana jako „szkoła piechoty i kawalerii” (ang. Infantry and Cavalry School). Szkoła powstała na podstawie Generalnych Wytycznych Departamentu Wojny z 7 maja 1881 roku, zgodnie z którymi generał dowodzący winien jak najszybciej założyć w Fort Leavenworth szkołę dla oficerów piechoty i kawalerii na wzór już działającej szkoły artylerii. W roku 1907 zmieniono nazwę na School of the Line. Program zajęć ulegał zmianie na podstawie doświadczeń, jakie niosły ze sobą I i II wojna światowa, wojna koreańska i wietnamska oraz wszystkie inne konfliktu zbrojne, łącznie z trwającymi współcześnie. Obok głównego kampusu w Fort Leavenworth, uczelnia posiada filie w Fort Belvoir i Fort Lee w Wirginii, Fort Gordon w Georgii i w Redstone Arsenal w Alabamie. Głównym zadaniem CGSC jest kształcenie i przygotowywanie przyszłych przywódców wojskowych do wszelkiego rodzaju działań, także w ramach wielonarodowych sił zbrojnych, jak również doskonalenie dowódców armii i zapoznawanie ich z najnowszymi osiągnięciami wymaganymi na współczesnym polu walki.
