It begins at U.S. 70/OK 199 in Madill, and ends about four miles north of the state line in South Haven, Kansas. Its first 15 miles are duplexed with OK 199 (former U.S. 70). In Dickson, U.S. 177 heads north on its own. The largest towns U.S. 177 travels through are Shawnee and Stillwater, home of Oklahoma State University. U.S. 177 has two interchanges with U.S. 412/Cimarron Turnpike-one is at the spur from the mainline turnpike, and one is 14 miles north of there at the actual turnpike. Just south of Ponca City, U.S. 177 heads west with U.S. 60 and U.S. 77 South and the three highways are duplexed for 12 miles. U.S. 77 heads south at the same interchange off U.S. 60 that U.S. 177 heads north. U.S. 177 crosses Interstate 35 four miles south of the state line and less than ten miles later, U.S. 177 finds its northern end at U.S. 81 in South Haven, Kansas. The route of U.S. 177 was once much shorter. It started at where the U.S. 77/OK 156 intersection is now south of Tonkawa but the highway's northern terminus was still in South Haven. At that time, U.S. 77 went along what is now OK 156 to get to Ponca City, and U.S. 177 continued straight north from that intersection. U.S. 177 was then extended along U.S. 60 East between Tonkawa and Ponca City, and then extended south along parts of what were then OK 40 and OK 18. OK 18 now ends at U.S. 177 in Shawnee, whereas it once ended at U.S. 70 in Dickson. U.S. 70 was rerouted to the south a couple miles, however, and the old U.S. 70 became OK 199. U.S. 177 runs along OK 199 for its first 15 miles between the current U.S. 70 and the old U.S. 70, then continues north along old OK 18 to Shawnee, then between Shawnee and Ponca City, current U.S. 177 runs along old OK 40.
