Good Ancestor Kilakila [Good Ancestor Foundation]
Good Ancestor Kilakila is an experimental communications 2U CubeSat offering extensive software-defined and hardware-defined radio capabilities built by NearSpace Launch and operated by Good Ancestor Foundation.
Its purpose is to allow for research into various applications with a low-cost SDR payload. These applications include wildlife tracking, amateur radio experimentation, and direct-to-device broadcasting. It's designed to be as inexpensive as possible for private individuals and small governments, and built with open source software and hardware.
Built on a shoestring budget with a very rapid timeline, the satellite uses open source hardware, including:
- LimeSDR-XTRX software defined radio
- Raspberry Pi Compute Module
- Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller
- Zephyr real-time operating system
- Raspberry Pi Camera Module
