Convoy HX 332 - warsailors.com (original) (raw)

CONVOY HX 332 Departed New York City on Jan. 13-1945 and arrived Liverpool on the 28th.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 47 ships in this convoy.

Transcribed from several documents received from Tony Cooper (Advance Sailing Telegram) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew. The station numbers and cargoes for the tankers have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for Convoy HX 332 at Ships in all HX convoys. See also Westbound Convoy ON 270. Details re. Arctic convoys were found in "Convoys to Russia 1941-1945" by Bob Ruegg and Arnold Hague. Crossed out ships did not sail, underlined returned to port (except those that are linked, which will automatically be underlined).

Additionally, the rescue vessel Zamalek joined from Halifax, taking station 74 - not listed in Advance Sailing Telegram - See Notes below.

Notes:
Commodore Captain F. H. Taylor, R.N. was in Norwegian Abraham Lincoln. Commodore's notes are not available.
According to A. Hague, Vice Commodore was the captain of Erin.

The Rescue Vessel Zamalek was on her 28th voyage as such, having started this voyage from Clyde on Dec. 14-1944 with the westbound Convoy ONS 38, to Halifax Jan. 1-1945. She returned with Convoy HX 332 on Jan. 15-1945, to Swansea Jan. 29, then travelled to Clyde with HX 332A, arriving Clyde on Jan. 31-1945. Her previous voyage had been with Convoy ON 261 / Convoy HX 319. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague).

The Norwegian Solør was torpedoed and damaged by U-825 on Jan. 27-1945; survivors were picked up by Zamalek - my page about this ship has more details.

Ruben Dario, on a voyage from New York to Manchester with 8026 tons of grain as well as gliders on deck was also hit in U-825's attack, but could continue her voyage. There were no casualties.

Martin van Buren, on a voyage from Boston for Halifax and N.W. France with 6100 tons general, trucks, Army rations and 2 locomotives on deck and 1000 tons ballast, was torpedoed on Jan. 14-1945 by U-1232. She had a crew of 41, 1 U.S. Army and 27 Armed Guard - 3 Armed Guard died. She later drifted ashore in the vicinity of Sambro and broke in two, becoming a total loss. ("Lloyd's War Losses" Vol. I). The British Athelviking and British Freedom, both en route to join the slow Convoy SC 165, were also torpedoed by U-1232 that day - follow the link for details.

Liberty Ships - Most of the ships listed as American in the table above were Liberty ships. This website listed them alphabetically (included "Sam" ships). Unfortunately, the list no longer appears to be included at this site (unfortunate, because I have 100's of links to it from my website). If I remember correctly, that particular section was hosted by Peter Thompson, who has now moved to a different site, but I cannot find his list of Liberty Ships. I'll leave the link up for now until I can find out whether it's still available somewhere. I did find an identical page here, but as will be seen, the alphabetical links receive an error.
