For information on voyages made in between those discussed here, please go to the archive documents and/or Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details; the Commodore's notes and/or misc. reports are also available for some of them and several Norwegian ships took part.
Evviva is listed in the original Advance Sailing Telegram for Convoy HN 19 from Norway to the U.K. in March-1940, bound for London with a cargo of pulp.
That summer, she's listed in Convoy OA 172, leaving Southend on June 21. Her destination is given as Southampton, cargo of coal, station 72, arriving Southampton on June 22 (Page 1 of the archive documents indicates she had initially been bound for Lorient but was diverted). According to the external website that I've linked to at the end of this page, this convoy was composed of 2 parts, OA 172(1) and OA 172(2), Eviva being in Part 2 as the only Norwegian ship, while Bonde, Trolla and Vestland were in Part 1 (A. Hague has also included Fernbank in OA 172). At the beginning of July, she's said to have been scheduled for Convoy OA 177G, but with a note saying "did not sail" (destination Lisbon). Note, however, that according to A. Hague, she did sail in this convoy, which departed Southend on July 1, joined up with Convoy OB 177 on July 3, the combined convoy forming Convoy OG 36, which arrived Gibraltar on the 9th (going back to Page 1, we see that she arrived Gibraltar on the 17th, but she had probably been to Lisbon first). The Norwegian Octavian was also scheduled for OA 177G, but did not sail - again, A. Hague states she did sail; he has also included the Norwegian Sevilla, but cargo is given as whale oil, so this was probably the British ship by the same name(?). Direct links to A. Hague's listing for these convoys have been provided within the Voyage Record. OG 36 will be added to an individual page in my Convoys section in due course; in the meantime, the ships sailing in it (and escorts) are named on the page listing ships in all OG convoys.
On July 21, we find Evviva in station 53 of Convoy HG 39 from Gibraltar to Liverpool, cargo of pit props, and on Aug. 15, she's listed in Convoy OB 198, bound for Sydney, C.B., where she arrived independently on Aug. 29 (A. Hague says she had become a straggler on Aug. 16). With a cargo of pit props for Blyth, she headed back to the U.K. on Sept. 10 with the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 4, arriving her destination on Oct. 6 (via Clyde and Methil - see Page 1). Together with Berto, Eastern Star, Erica, Granfoss, Iron Baron, Regin, Stargard and Trolla, she later joined Convoy OB 240, which originated in Liverpool on Nov. 8 (Evviva sailed from Oban, Nov. 9) and dispersed on the 13th, Evviva arriving Sydney, C.B. independently on Dec. 5.
With pit props for Tyne, she was scheduled for the slow Convoy SC 18 from Halifax on Jan. 2-1941, but did not sail. She was also cancelled from Convoy SC 19 on Jan. 12 (Ruth I was damaged), then joined Convoy SC 20, but returned to port, and eventually got away with SC 22 on Febr. 8. Her destination is now given as Immingham, where she arrived, via Loch Ewe and Methil, on March 5. At the end of that month, she's listed, along with Benwood, Facto, Leikanger and Troubadour, in Convoy OB 303 (link in table above), which originated in Liverpool on March 28 and dispersed Apr. 3, Evviva arriving Digby on Apr. 16, proceeding to Halifax that same day (see also Page 2). She was scheduled to return in Convoy SC 30 on Apr. 29, but instead joined SC 31 on May 9, cargo of lumber for London. (An analysis of attacks by a U-boat is also available for SC 19, while SC 30 has the Commodore's narrative, and SC 31 has orders for the escorts of the convoy).
In July that year, we find her in Convoy OB 343, which originated in Liverpool on July 6, dispersed July 21 and also included Arosa, Fanefjeld, Ferncourt (bombed - follow link for info), Grado, Henrik Ibsen, Idefjord, Måkefjell, Nesttun, Slemdal, Spurt, Star, Suderholm and Taborfjell. Evviva arrived Argentia (Newfoundland) on July 23, and having made a voyage to Pictou, she sailed to Sydney, C.B., with arrival Aug. 10, later joining the slow Convoy SC 41 from there on Aug. 24. This convoy is not yet available among the SC convoys included on my website, but will be added - see ships in all SC convoys. The Norwegian Akabahra, Astra, Audun, Balduin, Blink, Carrier (returned), Einvik (sunk - follow link for details), Fagersten, Fanefjeld, Grado, Gudrun, Heien, Hestmanden, Hildur I, Ledaal, Leka, Lom, Marga, Nesttun, Orania (returned), Reiaas, Siak and Spes are also listed (many of which joined from Iceland). Evviva, sailing in station 124, had a cargo of lumber. Via Belfast Lough and Barry Roads, she arrived Bristol on Sept. 15 - again, see Page 2.
Her subsequent voyages are shown on Page 3, Page 4 and Page 5, while convoy info for a few of them can be found in the Voyage Record above.
In Apr.-1942, she's listed in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 88*, which originated in Liverpool on Apr. 21 and also had Akabahra, Brisk, Bruse Jarl, Don, Gezina, Henrik Ibsen, Inger Lise, Marga, Senta, Spurt and Star in its ranks. Evviva arrived St. John, N.B. on May 8 (having started out from Loch Ewe on Apr. 21), and at the end of that month, I have her in Convoy SC 85 from Sydney, C.B., cargo of lumber for London. In July she joined the westbound Convoy ON 112*, together with Albert L. Ellsworth, Bjørkhaug, Borgholm, Bruse Jarl, Facto, Fidelio, Gezina, Hjalmar Wessel, Ingerfem, Lisbeth, Loke, Norjerv, Ragnhild, Selvik and Titanian. Evviva arrived Halifax on July 28, having joined from Loch Ewe (convoy originated in Liverpool July 13). The following month, she was in Convoy SC 97, in which Bronxville was sunk (Bonneville acted as the Vice Commodore's ship). Evviva had a cargo of lumber for Kings Lynn, where she arrived on Sept. 10 - see Page 5.
She was later used as ammunition and supply ship in the Torch operations, which commenced on Nov. 8-1942, and appears to have been in the same convoy(?) as D/S Selbo, attacked by aircraft on Nov. 28 - follow the link for more info (see also Page 6). 1st Mate at the time was Jens Sperre, who with gunner Ole Jerndorf Kastor Johansen reported that one of the attacking aircraft was shot down by Evviva's Oerlikon. The gunner received the British "Mentioned in Despatches for his good services in shooting down an enemy aircraft off Bougie in November-1942". At the end of the following month she's mentioned (by A. Hague) in connection with Convoy MKS 4, making a voyage from Algiers to Oran, where she arrived on Dec. 26 (scroll down a little to my notes in the table on that page - again, see also Page 6).
A. Hague also mentions her in connection with Convoy KMS 6, going in the other direction, in Jan.-1943, voyaging from Oran to Philippeville (so must have joined this convoy at Oran; she arrived Philippeville on Jan. 8). This is the convoy in which Akabahra was sunk. At the beginning of the following month, Evviva is said to have made a voyage from Bone to Algiers, and from Algiers to Oran with Convoy MKS 7. She's also listed in Convoy MKS 11 in Apr.-1943, leaving the convoy at Algiers. Torfinn Jarl and Bruse Jarl are also included. In May, Evviva can be found in Convoy SL 128/MKS 12. The SL section had originated in Freetown on Apr. 20, then joined up with MKS 12* from Gibraltar on May 4, the combined convoy arriving Liverpool on May 14; Evviva arrived Avonmouth that day, having left Gibraltar on May 2 with the MKS convoy. She had a cargo of phosphates, voyage Bone-Belfast Dock. Kristianiafjord, Rutenfjeld and Toledo are also named. From Avonmouth, she proceeded to Cardiff the next day, remaining there for a month and in June, we find her, along with Kristianiafjord, Lysaker V, Marga, Norfalk and Vigsnes, in Convoy OS 50/KMS 17, voyaging from Milford to Bone in station 11. The convoy originated in Liverpool on June 16 and split up on June 27, with the ships going to Gibraltar (incl. Evviva) arriving there on June 29. Direct links to both these convoys have been provided in the Voyage Record above. The Gibraltar portion is also available in my own Convoys section at KMS 17. It'll be noticed that Evviva is also included in the second table on my page about this convoy, in other words, she continued from Gibraltar for her destination Bone on June 30, with arrival Bone on July 4.
The rest of her 1943 voyages are listed on Page 6 and Page 7; the latter document also has some 1944 voyages. Convoy information for some of them can be found in the table above.
Skipping now to July-1944, when Evviva is listed in Convoy KMS 57*, voyaging from Augusta to Port Said, where she arrived on Aug. 4, having left Augusta on July 30 (the convoy had sailed from Gibraltar on July 25). Astrid, Bestik and Novasli are also named in this convoy. Her subsequent movements are shown on Page 8, which also has a few 1945 voyages.
On Apr. 10-1945 she sailed from Casablanca to Londonderry in Convoy MKS 94*, arriving Londonderry on Apr. 18, cargo of phosphates. Other Norwegian ships were Jenny and Karmt. Evviva's voyages in this period are listed on Page 9. From this document, we also learn that she got to go home to Norway already in July that year, making several more voyages home before that year was over. See also Page 10.
* The ON convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section, with more information on each; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys. The KMS and MKS convoys will also be added, but for now, please see ships in all KMS convoys and ships in all MKS convoys.
More information on all the other Norwegian ships named on this page is available via the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.
