For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the Norwegian archives and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details; the Commodore's notes are also available for some of them, and several Norwegian ships took part.
For more information on the OB convoys mentioned on this page, please see the links in the Voyage Record.
From Page 1 of the archive documents, we learn that Ingertre was on her way from Chicama (via Cristobal) to New York when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940. She arrived New York on Apr. 10, and appears to have remained there for over a month; departure is given as May 16, when she proceeded to St. Nazaire, with arrival June 4. She managed to escape St. Nazaire later that month (as the last ship to leave), during the chaotic days of evacuations from France. No pilot or tugs were to be found, but the captain was able to maneuvre the ship out without, just as the Germans marched into the city(?), and arrived safely in the U.K. (the archive document gives arrival Falmouth, June 21; I believe that's the date the Germans occupied St. Nazaire?).
In Aug.-1940, she's listed, together with the Norwegian Berto, Corvus, Loke, Ringhorn, Thermopylæ and Vilja, in Convoy OB 193, which originated in Liverpool on Aug. 4 and dispersed on the 7th, Ingertre arriving Lunenburg on Aug. 18 (she had started out from Milford Haven on Aug. 4). She later proceeded to Halifax and Sydney, C.B. (Cape Breton), and from there, she joined the slow Convoy SC 4 on Sept. 10. Ingertre was bound for Hull with a cargo of pit props, and appears to have been cancelled from the faster Convoy HX 72, in which Simla and several others were sunk (follow the links for details). She arrived Hull, via Clyde and Methil Roads, on Oct. 7. The following month, she shows up in Convoy OB 244, which lost several ships. Her destination is given as Sydney, C. B. and she had station 93, having sailed from Oban on Nov. 18. The convoy was dispersed on Nov. 22, and Ingertre arrived her destination on Dec. 6. A few days later, she continued to St. John, N.B., remaining there for a month, before leaving for Halifax on Jan. 15-1941 - again, see Page 1.
With a cargo of pit props for West Hartlepool, she headed back to the U.K. in Convoy SC 20 from Halifax on Jan. 22-1941 (as will be seen when following the link, this convoy also lost several ships). In March, she's listed in Convoy OB 300, originating in Liverpool on March 20, dispersed March 26, Ingertre arriving Halifax on Apr. 8, continuing to St. John, N.B. that same day; according to the archive document mentioned above, she had started out from Loch Ewe on March 22. Jenny and Ranja are also listed. On Apr. 29, she joined Convoy SC 30 from Halifax, cargo of lumber for Hull, where she arrived May 24. The Commodore's narrative is also available for this convoy. In June, she's listed (with Hjalmar Wessel and Velma) in Convoy OB 333, which originated in Liverpool on June 10 and dispersed on the 21st, Ingertre arriving Clarke City on June 30 (having sailed from Oban on June 11).
According to Arnold Hague, she returned to the U.K. with a cargo of pulp in Convoy SC 37*, departing Sydney, C.B. on July 12 - her voyages in this peridod are shown on Page 2. The following month, we find her in station 84 of the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 7; her destination is given as St. John's, N.F., where she arrived on Aug. 29, the convoy having been dispersed a few days before. A. Hague later has her returning in Convoy SC 47*, departing Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 29. Eglantine was among the escorts for a while - see SC convoy escorts. In Nov.-1941, she made a voyage to Tampa, having sailed in Convoy ON 35, which was dispersed on Nov. 27, Ingertre arriving Tampa on Dec. 9. See also the Commodore's narrative. Her last Trans-Atlantic voyage that year was made in Convoy SC 62 from Sydney, C.B. on Dec. 27, cargo of phosphates for Tees. Montbretia and Rose are named among the escorts.
In Febr.-1942, she joined the westbound Convoy ON 68* (Tyr was sunk), which originated in Liverpool on Febr. 19 and for which Evanger served as Commodore Vessel. Ingertre sailed from Loch Ewe that day and arrived St. John's, N.F. on March 5. On Apr. 11, she went back in the other direction again with Convoy SC 79 from Halifax, cargo of timber for Newport, where she arrived Apr. 28, and the following month, she's listed in the westbound Convoy ON 94*, which originated in Liverpool on May 12 and arrived Halifax May 25 (Evanger again served as Commodore Vessel) - Ingertre had started out from Milford Haven on May 11 - see Page 3. In June, she joined Convoy SC 88 from Sydney, C.B., cargo of lumber for Immingham, with arrival July 6. Montbretia and Rose are again named among the escorts, as are Acanthus and Potentilla. Later that month, Ingertre can be found in the westbound Convoy ON 114*, originating in Liverpool on July 19 (Commodore in Bonneville). Ingertre sailed from Loch Ewe that day and arrived Halifax Aug. 3, heading back across the Atlantic again on Aug. 29 in Convoy SC 98 from Halifax, cargo of steel and pulp for Rochester, wehre she arrived (via various other ports) Sept. 21 - see Page 4. It'll also be noticed that she subsequently appears to have spent quite a long time in Immingham, where she arrived Sept. 28; departure is given as Oct. 31 (A. Hague indicates she had previously been involved in a collision, perhaps repairs were necessary?).
About a week later, she joined the westbound Convoy ON 144*. Eglantine, Montbretia (sunk - follow the link for details), Potentilla and Rose were again among the escorts. This convoy originated in Liverpool on Nov. 7 and arrived New York Nov. 27, but Ingertre joined from Oban and stopped at Halifax on Nov. 25, later joining Convoy ON 146* from there, arriving New York on Dec. 9 (this convoy had started out in Liverpool Nov. 15).
Her subsequent voyages are shown on Page 4 and Page 5; convoy information for some of these is available in the Voyage Record. As will be seen, she did not go back to the U.K. again until Sept. 3-1943, when we find her in Convoy SC 141 from Halifax, cargo of lumber for Tyne.
Ingertre is mentioned in Convoy OS 62/KMS 36, which originated in Liverpool on Dec. 15-1943 (she sailed from Oban Dec. 16). Her destination is given as Sicily, and she's listed in the Gibraltar portion of the convoy (KMS 36*), which arrived there on Jan. 3-1944, the convoy having split up the day before (the OS portion continued to Freetown). Note, however, that according to A. Hague, she returned to port, arriving Clyde on Dec. 23, and did not leave the U.K. until Jan. 8-1944, when she sailed to Gibraltar, with arrival Jan. 18, remaining in that part of the world for a long time. She's listed in Convoy KMS 39*, voyage Oran to Augusta, where she arrived on Febr. 3, having left Oran on Jan. 29, according to A. Hague (note that Page 5 does not mention Oran at this time). In Apr.-1944, she made a voyage from Bizerta to Philippeville, having sailed in Convoy MKS 45*. She arrived Philippeville on Apr. 8, subsequently proceeding to Algiers, where she arrived Apr. 11. From there, she later joined Convoy KMS 48* in order to sail to Augusta, arriving May 1. She's also included in Convoy KMS 52* in June, voyage from Algiers to Bone - again, see Page 5 of the archive documents, as well as Hague's Voyage Record above for departure and arrival dates in this period. Page 6 has the rest of her 1944 voyages and some of her 1945 voyages, which continue on Page 7.
* The ON convoys are available and will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course. In the meantime, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys. As will be seen, they all had several Norwegian ships. The entire SC series will also be updated and completed - see ships in all SC convoys. Additionally, all the KMS convoys and MKS convoys will be added, but for now, please see ships in KMS convoys and ships in MKS convoys.
For more information on all the other Norwegian ships mentioned on this page, please see the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.
Went ashore in fog, at Alkhornet, at the entrance to Isfjord on Oct. 16-1949. Salvage was impossible (Charles Hocking).
Back to Ingertre on the "Ships starting with I" page.
The company had previously had another Ingertre, built 1920, 3088 gt, went ashore at Trefodskjær, south of Florø on Jan. 12-1936, slid off and sank.
