Mineral Species sorted by the element Sm Samarium (original) (raw)

Samarium (Sm) Element Properties

Atomic Mass 150.36
Atomic Number 62
Name Origins Named after the mineral Samarskite.
Year Discovered 1879
Discovery Credits Discovered by P. E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran at Paris, France.
Remarks Silvery white metal of the lanthanide group. Relatively stable in dry air but in moist air an oxide coating forms. Used in permanent magnets, organic reagents, special glass, catalysts, ceramics, and electronics.Diagnostic tests: There are no simple diagnostic tests to identify Samarium. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is commonly employed to identify and analyze members of the Rare-Earth group elements.
