Barahir A title used in Rohan for the Lady Éowyn, niece to King Théoden and sister to his successor Éomer. She won renown during the War of the Ring, when she disguised herself as a Rider named 'Dernhelm' and rode with the Rohirrim to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. There she faced the Witch-king, mightiest of the servants of Sauron, and in the combat that followed, the Lord of the Nazgûl broke her shield arm with his mace. The Witch-king thought that he had little to fear, because it had long ago been prophesied that he could not be slain by the hand of man. Éowyn, however, revealed the she was not a man, but a shieldmaiden of the Rohirrim. Despite her injured arm, and aided by the Hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck (called Holdwine by the Rohirrim), she was able to slay the master of the Dark Lord's forces. For her valour she was remembered long after the battle as the Lady of the Shield-arm in the songs and annals of the Rohirrim.
